Durham, North Carolina-based MAKE returns with their first album in a decade, announcing their fourth LP, Exegesis At The End Of Time, for release on June 12th on Accident Prone Records, and unveiling its cover art, track listing, preorders, and lead single, âThe End Of The Night.â
MAKE has been haunting the central North Carolina music scene since 2008, when Scott Endres (Horseback, The Pod, SUNTAN) and Spencer Lee (Systems, Vanishing Point) began collaborating on thematic psychedelic noise-sludge. Drawing on themes of isolation, loss, hope, absurdism, and cataclysm, what started as a space-doom project has since evolved into something far more varied and expressive. During that time the band has been a significant presence in the regional music scene, performing on diverse lineups from Bull City Metal Fest to Hopscotch Music Festival, and touring with a wide range of extreme acts including Crowhurst, Dragged Into Sunlight, Primitive Man, and more.
In 2016, MAKE joined forces with Accident Prone Records for the release of Pilgrimage Of Loathing, which received praise from fans and the media alike. The Quietus wrote, “MAKE conjure a sound that is just as experimental as it is rooted in the brutality of sludge/doom.â Stereogum proclaimed, âUncontrollable anger aside, there are plenty of moments of pure contemplative beauty, when picked guitars delicately intertwine in zen-inducing ways over feathered drums.â
A decade later, MAKE now delivers their monolithic fourth album, Exegesis At The End Of Time, once again elevating their place in the genre. The expansive Exegesis At The End Of Time sees MAKE welcoming co-conspirators John Crouch (Horseback, Caltrop, Vanishing Point) and Aaron Smithers (In The Year Of The Pig), making them a four-piece for the first time since their first EP (2010) and expanding the band’s cacophonous palate. On this album, the band combines a diversity of influences in building both the music and the concept for the record. Droning repetition, angular noise rock, and massive sludge riffs coalesce to underpin literary themes spanning Pynchon and DeBord to Borges and McCarthy, forging a warning: The order that rules our world represents a cosmic violence that will destroy us if we don’t conquer it.
Recorded at The Fidelitorium, produced and mixed by Kris Hilbert (Between The Buried And Me, The Body, Centuries) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Deadguy, Locrian), the art and layout for Exegesis At The End Of Time was handled by the bandâs Scott Endres. Those who immerse themselves in the works of Old Man Gloom, Mouth Of The Architect, Rosetta, The Atlas Moth, Rwake, Isis, Amenra, Neurosis, and other encompassing sludge/post-metal acts are advised to hear MAKEâs Exegesis At The End Of Time.
The lead preview of Exegesis At The End Of Time arrives through the massive opening movement âThe End Of The Night,â paired with an abstract visualizer created by David Brenner (Gridfailure, Earsplit PR). Endres writes, âThe song was written in part by aping lyrics from the Beresinalied, a song/poem from which the title to Celineâs novel Journey To The End Of The Night was taken from, which in itself was chosen as inspiration for the novelâs depiction of the human condition and its sort of pessimistic take on (but still true to the core of) existentialism.â
Lee adds, âFor me, this song is about finally reaching the end of a slog, looking up, and realizing the next day is just going to be more of the same. It’s an increasingly common condition these days, spurred by the people who have the power to take advantage of those who are forced to give their labor to sustain themselves. The album isn’t totally devoid of hope, but this song is.â
