American music icon WYNONNA and her band THE BIG NOISE, led by Cactus Moser, WYNONNA’s producer, longtime drummer and husband, will perform new music from their self-titled debut album just released February 12 on Curb Records. Rave reviews have been flooding in (see below) with critics calling this arguably the best album of her career, describing the music as raw, rootsy, joyful, tough and tender, noting that this project marks the beginning of a new chapter in WYNONNA’s 30+ year career.
The album is also seeing success at radio; it has been consistently rising up the Americana Airplay chart and has now broken into the Top 10 at #7 (for the week of 3/7/16).
Special guests on WYNONNA & THE BIG NOISE include Susan Tedeschi, Jason Isbell, Timothy B Schmit and Derek Trucks. Produced by Cactus Moser, the self-titled album includes cuts written by the band, Americana innovator Julie Miller, R&B’s Raphael Saadiq, as well as Music Row legend John Scott Sherrill and multiple CMA Awards-winner and Grammy Award-winner Chris Stapleton, coupled with WYNONNA‘s commanding and incomparable voice.
The band made their national TV debut last month when they performed “Ain’t No Thing,” a song co-written by Chris Stapleton, on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” A special encore performance will air this Friday, March 11 at 12:35/11:35c on NBC and can also be seen online here.
Media Praise for WYNONNA & THE BIG NOISE:
“…the self-titled Wynonna & The Big Noise brings a raw, unvarnished approach to the album’s dozen tracks, which run the gamut from gutsy blues to sweet, Seventies-inspired country-pop. While the LP is a natural for the wide-open Americana format, Wynonna’s legions of country fans will feel right at home…”
Wynonna & The Big Noise lays bare the joy that is Judd’s most potent gift as a vocalist…Wynonna’s in the big field now. But she was always there anyway, with her magnificently versatile alto and penchant for both belting and swooning. With her tight band behind her after touring together for several years, she just sounds like she’s home…You can just feel the grin on her face.”
–Ann Powers, NPR, February 3, 2016
“Backed by a bluesy band that includes her producer-drummer husband, Cactus Moser, she’s hit on a sound that’s pure Wynonna: big, bold and irresistible…this set complements her southern R&B vocals with a rollicking roots-rock vibe, unleashed on the opener, ‘Ain’t No Thing,” and the stand out ‘Staying in Love.’ If you want music with sass, soul and toe-tapping rhythm, Wynonna is the one name for you.”
PEOPLE, February 22, 2016
“Wynonna sounds as good as everOn her first album fronting a band, Wynonna brings the noise, for sure; but she also offers a master class on how to instill feeling into songs arranged in a variety of musical styles.”
“Singer Wynonna Judd opens a new chapter in her long career with her forthcoming album Wynonna & The Big Noise, her first with a full band of her own…the sound, however, is a departure, more stripped to the bone and rootsy, more contemporary American…”
“Free from any artistic restraints, Wynonna explores her rock/soul/R&B roots with almost diabolical passion, backed by the Big Noise, an aggregation that’s fervently up to the task. The band complements Wynonna’s big voice with crunching guitars, bluesy slide work, organ and some inventive drumming by Cactus Moser…In every aspect, from production to instrumentation and Wynonna’s sensational performances, this ranks as her absolute best solo effort.
“…a celebration of love. In talking with the country songstress, one gets the feeling she is at a blissful point in her life where she has wanted to be for a long time — and it can be heard glowingly on each track…What sets the disc — her first of non-covers since 2003’s What The World Needs Now Is Love — apart is that it is truly a band effort recorded with her four-man ensemble.
–Chuck Dauphin, BILLBOARD, January 29, 2016
“Although she’s never been away, this feels like a comeback for Wynonna Judd…this is primarily Wynonna and her band collaborating on a set of first-class songs that succeed by sounding far more rootsy, earthy and raw than in the past…it’s yet additional proof of her tough/tender, sassy/sensitive vocal prowess and arguably the finest release of her extensive career. 4 out of 5 stars.”
