OCTOPLOID, fronted by bassist Olli-Pekka “Oppu” Laine — known for his work with Amorphis, Barren Earth, and Mannhai — is wrapping up an eventful 2024 with the release of a lyric video for âCoast Of The Drowned Sailors.â The track appears on the bandâs debut album, Beyond The Aeons, released in July via Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM).
Beyond The Aeons features an impressive roster of prestigious guest musicians. âCoast Of The Drowned Sailorsâ highlights vocals by Laine’s AMORPHIS bandmate, Tomi Koivusaari. Known for his iconic growls, Koivusaari lends his signature style to the track, creating a direct connection between OCTOPLOID and Laine’s early musical roots. Complementing Koivusaari’s leads, Jani “Joãnitor” Muurinen (Xysma, ex-Mannhai) contributes mellow clean vocals, adding depth and contrast. The album’s persistent psychedelic theme resonates throughout âCoast Of The Drowned Sailors,â making it not only a fan favorite but also a perfect introduction for listeners new to the band’s â70s-inspired death/prog metal sound.
Oppu stateS, “‘Coast Of The Drowned Sailors’ is a conscious nod to the â90s, and the only possible interpreter for it was Mr. Tomi Koivusaari. The track marries the essence of original melodic death metal with elements of slide and acoustic guitar characteristic of southern rock ballads. Also featured is Jani “Joãnitor” Muurinen, the legendary vocalist from the band Xysma, who delivers the more hopeful part of the lyrics. Overall, ‘Sailors’ is an unapologetically old-school melodic death metal track executed with a modern touch!”

OCTOPLOID was established in 2022. This venture has culminated in Beyond The Aeons, the act’s debut album which was released in July through Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM). OCTOPLOID‘s music merges elements of â90s death/black metal, â70s prog rock, and â90s psychedelic rock, carving a distinct niche in the music landscape. The sound of OCTOPLOID has aptly been described as “classic death prog.”
The bandâs lineup is built around Laine and features three talented musicians. Versatile drummer Mikko Pietinen, with experience ranging from stoner rock with Mannhai to Finnish mainstream pop rock (including bands like Kasmir), and lead/rhythm guitarist Peter Salonen, known for his work with The Kinky Thing (a band that performs covers of Finnish psych rock legends Kingston Wall) are relatively new to the scene. The group is completed by keyboardist Kim Rantala (Giant Robot, formerly of Amorphis).
