Boston, Massachusetts-based HELLHORSE has released a video for “The Long Drought,” which comes off their incoming 2nd EP, Paradise Lost, set to be released in early October through Creator-Destructor Records. The video makes its public debut through an exclusive premiere hosted at Decibel Magazine. HELLHORSE has also updated their East Coast tour which begins this Friday.
The bold and ominous video for HELLHORSE’s “The Long Drought” was directed by Jesse Dampolo. guitarist Brian O’Rourke offers, “We didn’t want to create a video with a straightforward narrative or just jam the song in a room. The idea to use silhouettes came up early on. From there, we used concepts from the songs and album artwork for what would be shown. Taking it a step further, we thought it might be interesting if the imagery was being used for brainwashing, in a very Clockwork Orange type of way.”
On the song meaning, intent, and lyrics, HELLHORSE vocalist Joseph Feeley provides, “’The Long Drought’ sets the tone for the rest of the record. Lyrically, this record focuses on climate change. Climate change is happening and it’s perilous to ignore it. This song focuses on effects we are already seeing, specifically drought, more extreme storms, and warmer global temperatures. ‘The Long Drought’ also examines the denial of climate change which relates to the human impulse to destroy and collapse in on oneself. If this continues, we will be going down a path that will lead to suffering on a global scale.”
Decibel writes with its premiere of the video, “Every day, it seems more and more like the results of climate change will result in something out of a horror or dystopian movie. HELLHORSE hold a similar belief, expressing it in artistic fashion with the video for “The Long Draught,” a new song from their appropriately-titled Paradise Lost EP. Instrumentally, HELLHORSE have a lot in common with the metalcore kings of the early 2000s: Converge, Botch, Poison the Well, et al. Singer Joe Feeley helps differentiate HELLHORSE with a vocal style that sounds equally inspired by post-metal and melodic hardcore.”

HELLHORSE has honed their special craft of crushing chaotic metalcore/d-beat crossover, reminiscent of the early-2000s stylings of Botch, Converge, and Poison The Well. The six-song Paradise Lost EP is HELLHORSE’s Creator-Destructor debut, and the follow-up to the band’s Old Dystopia EP, which the band self-released in 2018. Paradise Lost was recorded in spring of 2019 at Labyrinth Audio in Peabody, Massachusetts, engineered by Kevin Gentile and Nick Twohig. Mixing duties were handled by Sonny DiPerri, and the album was mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering. The band went with Chris Smith for the album artwork and layout, who also handled the Old Dystopia art.
