Decibel Magazine is currently streaming Tavastland, the latest full-length from Finnish black metal outfit HAVUKRUUNU, in its ferocious entirety. The premiere comes on the eve of the record’s official release on February 28th via Svart Records.

Comments the band, “Fuck it up and let the evil fire to blaze from your speakers to achieve an altered blasphemous state; hail the gods of the four winds and let your steel shine bright in the light of the moon. Let the heaths, titan-woods and dark waters of Tavastland sing you their songs of sorrow and enchantment!”

Adds Decibel Magazine, “HAVUKRUUNU is one of Finland’s finest black metal exports, and has become an essential pillar of paganism-infused atmospheric excellence. The band combines the style’s penchant for soaring, flowing notes with the raw and icy tones sometimes missing from the legions of Bergtatt-worshipping pretenders. Albums like 2017’s Kelle surut soi and 2020’s Uinuos syömein sota made the band synonymous with quality: a sound at once fierce and powerful, yet also dramatic and majestic. And thus the epic saga continues on the band’s latest album, Tavastland, which Decibel is proud to present in it’s full glory here today.”

After three albums, the pieces of the puzzle fit, and HAVUKRUUNU returns with a vengeance. The sorrowful guitars of Stefa and Bootleg-Henkka draw threatening dark shadows on the wall, Kostajainen’s drum bombardment pulses like embers of a dying fire in the hearth. All the while, Humö’s bass guitar is clanking and wailing like the icy wind rattling windows and banging walls as Stefa roars and channels messages from the netherworld or preaches wisdom of ancient days, backed by a choir.

Lords of Hell smile approvingly as the flames of hatred and cunning of their beloved sons drowns a dying old world, and the heart of the earth trembles the birth of the new and weird. HAVUKRUUNU is the spirit of freedom, the harbinger of oblivion, and it tells you: “Fly, You Fools!”

Elaborates Stefa on the album’s theme, “Tavastland tells how in 1237 the Tavastians rose in a rebellion against the church of Christ and drove the popes naked into the frost to die. Tavastland reveals our fathers’ centuries old sins and lies of consolation. Tavastland speaks of him, who has become a prisoner of his home, alienated from the land of the forest and is now afraid of the dark with all lights on, surrounded by his smart devices. Tavastland tells about the freedom we lost. Tavastland haunts its listener to the grave, and I will personally open that grave one bleak night and steal the fading light of your sempiternal soul.”

HAVUKRUUNU’s Tavastland will be available on CD, cassette, and digital formats as well as vinyl in the following color variants: Amber + Black Smoke and Classic Black. Tavastland’s first Svart exclusive – the Ice + Blood vinyl edition – is now sold out. The label has now unveiled a second exclusive edition on  Transparent Green + Black Smoke vinyl (limited to 313 copies). All vinyl editions of the first pressing include a booklet and poster. A new HAVUKRUUNU sweatshirt is also up for preorder. T-shirts are still available as well.

“…another black metal album in the epic vein for the Finnish outfit, but it might just be their most well-written, polished, and unapologetically ’80s/’90s-inspired offering to date. Still capturing what makes your favorite legacy acts so irresistible, HAVUKRUUNU whips together a smorgasbord of them all — the Bathorys, Rotting Christs, and Moonsorrows — but are creating a unique legacy of their own. A must listen, and a superbly enjoyable one at that.” — Last Rites

“…an absolute must-listen, for any fans of black metal, and black metal adjacent sounds.” – Noizze UK

“HAVUKRUUNU crafted a diverse album that fits with the themes of the past albums, thus presenting a sonic medium that connects the band with the ancient tale of Tavastland.” — Grimm Gent

“…a harrowing tale that might have its roots in the past but bleeds completely into our present, where we take our eyes off the ball far too frequently. HAVUKRUUNU delivers this in bloody, violent rage, something you can feel in every second of this record, even amid melodies that might trick you into assuming some level of comfort. This is both a history lesson and a warning, something we’re not likely to heed as we don’t seem to learn lessons very well as a populace. So, HAVUKRUUNU are here to remind us with a steaming blade to the throat.” – Meat Mead Metal

“…another massive achievement from one of black metal’s brightest stars.” – Nine Circles

“They perfectly alternate between epic metal, melodic black metal, blackened folk, and even some atmospheric black metal with ease and expertise. It’s such an eclectic and varied record that its 50+ minute run-time just flies by and you’re still left satisfied and ready to spin it again.” –  Toilet Ov Hell
