ââ¦a gloomy trudge down a depressing musical pathâ¦â â Decibel Magazine
“Engulfed In Grief” is the crawling new track from Edmonton, Alberta-based death/doom metal duo ANTHRODYNIA. Now playing exclusively at Decibel Magazine, the song is the latest preview of the bandâs impending debut LP, Unspeakable Horrors Emanating From Within, nearing release on Nameless Grave Records.
As the behavior of mankind increases in cruelty and pettiness, a permanent state of exhaustion has taken its hold. These words define and inform the sound of the newly formed ANTHRODYNIA. The duo of Derek Orthner (Begrime Exemious, Azath) and Durell Smith (ex-Mahria, ex-Kuroi Jukai) formed out of their love for the variety of sounds the two genres cover.
ANTHRODYNIA now presents their debut album, Unspeakable Horrors Emanating From Within, its five harrowing tracks suffocating the listener with nearly forty minutes of dismal, brutalizing, glacial death metal and morbid auras. Taking influence from the likes of Disembowelment, Incantation, Spectral Voice, and Grief, they combine frantic death metal with dismal doom sections. Ethereal lead work pushes ANTHRODYNIAâs sound further into the depths of darkness.
Unspeakable Horrors Emanating From Within was recorded, mixed, and produced by Derek Orthner, mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, and completed with Artwork and logo by Karmazid, photography by Circle Of Bones, and layout by Derek Orthner.
With the albumâs second single, “Engulfed In Grief,” Orthner reveals, âThis track is a not-so-subtle homage to the band Grief, as we were trying to tap into that dismal sludge sound for the first half of this song. The lyrics deal with how brutal the grieving process can be, as it can completely drain one’s motivation, and lead to a bleak existence. Poor coping mechanisms become self-sabotage, especially in the case of substance abuse. This was a very cathartic song to write, personally speaking, and felt appropriate for the heaviness of the music. The layering of lead guitar harmonies in the final part of the song really digs into those early-â90s death/doom influences, and I like how it came out.â
Decibel writes how the song, âlands sonically with impressive weight and attendant foul stench. Itâs a gloomy trudge down a depressing musical path with gut-emptying vocals and riffs that unfurl in slow motion.â
