“The metalcore revival has gone in a whole bunch of different directions over the years, but it feels like itâs been a minute since weâve gotten this type of chaosâor at least this type of chaos done this well.â — BrooklynVegan
Genesis Of Error, the new EP from Long Island, New York-based progressive/experimental metal architects CRYPTODIRA, is out today on Silent Pendulum Records.
Notes Brooklyn Vegan of the bandâs âThe Same River Twiceâ single, â[Itâs] an under-two-minute frenzy thatâs cut from that same BTBAM/DEP cloth, with a little Converge in there too, especially in its speed and brevity. The metalcore revival has gone in a whole bunch of different directions over the years, but it feels like itâs been a minute since weâve gotten this type of chaosâor at least this type of chaos done this well.â In an 8.5/10 review, Dead Rhetoric writes, “Pushing boundaries is the key to establishing your own space in this genre. CRYPTODIRA possesses all the requisite tools of the trade, knowledge, and proper seasoning to achieve an ample place at the table of progressive/experimental metal with Genesis Of Error.â Rebel Extravaganza concurs, â[The song] âNo Monumentsâ shows that that thirst remains unslaked, this spiked and horned child of Mastodon and Cryptopsy both more bristled than ever, and still â in the non-face-ripping sections â more sublime. Despite its brevity, âThe Same River Twiceâ is a caterwauling careen downhill race, just this side of uncontrolled, and the nine+ minute title track is a study in sonic immersion. An almost Nektar prog sensibility at the calmer moments, Botch-level chaos in the others, Genesis Of Error is expansive, and expanding. No horizonsâ¦â

From the moment they debuted with 2017âs The Devilâs Despair, it was immediately apparent that CRYPTODIRA was a far cry from the polished, ultra-clean progressive metal stylings of their peers. A seamless blend of technically precise riffing, melancholic soundscapes, and the raw, feedback-driven aggression of bands far from the prog world allowed the Long Island foursome to carve out a niche all to themselves in the crowded heavy music landscape.
The bandâs sophomore effort, The Angel Of History (2020), showed an increased willingness to wade into uncharted territory and further embrace its experimental influences. The albumâs furious lyrical themes, critical of the oppressive history of both past and present, were brought into focus to make CRYPTODIRAâs message abundantly clear. Wrote Everything Is Noise of the release, âThe riffs are enormous, the vocals are emotional and raw, and the band is wildly tight.â Lauded Metal Trenches, âif you want something proggy, powerful, and atmospheric, this band has you covered.â
The foundation established by the bandâs first two releases led to extensive touring across the USA, Canada, and Europe/UK with progressive metal greats such as Between The Buried And Me, Haken, Intervals, Rolo Tomassi, Veil Of Maya, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Animals As Leaders, and many more.
With 2025 comes the dawn of a new era for CRYPTODIRA with the Genesis Of Error EP. Shortly after recording, the band added bassist Vincent Romanelli (Moon Tooth) to the trio of founding members guitarist/vocalist Scott Acquavella, guitarist/vocalist Mike Monaco, and drummer Matthew Taibi, marking a clear divide between the past and present. With their latest offering, CRYPTODIRA are once again pushing themselves beyond the boundaries of metal and into a space of their own.
