REVIEW – There’s something deeply evocative about the union of voice and atmosphere—and few projects embody that intersection as elegantly as WHISPERS OF GRANITE on their debut album Liquid Stone, due out July 4th via Apollon Records. The collaborative project between Norwegian vocalist Trude Eidtang and German composer/keyboardist Andreas Hack is a mesmerizing journey that blends progressive rock, melancholic folk, and cinematic textures into something wholly fresh yet comfortingly familiar.

From the opening of “Spirals”, listeners are swept into a slow-burning world where Eidtang’s ethereal vocal delivery coils around Hack’s rich instrumental tapestry. Her voice moves with haunting grace—at once restrained and full of aching beauty—while Hack’s instrumentation pulses with detail, threading organic and synthetic textures through hypnotic rhythms and immersive melodies.

Lead single “Hiding in Plain Sight” is a highlight, showcasing the duo’s strength in crafting hooks that resonate emotionally without sacrificing complexity. Subtle shifts in tone and tempo keep the track grounded in progressive territory, yet it never loses its soulful core.

Tracks like “Ocean Maker” and “Silver Green” reach near-epic heights, with saxophone and guitar flourishes from guests like Marek Arnold and Paul Sadler adding texture and nuance. Meanwhile, pieces like “Fleet City” and “Age of Seven” lean into the cinematic, revealing the depth of Hack’s compositional scope—his post-rock, ambient, and progressive roots all evident and beautifully integrated.

Lyrically, the album explores transformation, duality, and emotional resilience—echoed in the title Liquid Stone, a poetic metaphor for fragility and permanence. Eidtang’s lyrics feel personal yet abstract, like reflections whispered from beneath still waters. Her performance on “One More Reason” and “Endlessly” are especially compelling, capturing a powerful balance of vulnerability and control.

Though it may be their first release as WHISPERS OF GRANITE, there’s a seasoned maturity to Liquid Stone. Every detail—from the layered production to the evocative artwork—feels intentional and artful. The result is a record that doesn’t just ask to be heard but felt. It’s an invitation into an introspective soundscape that lingers long after the final note.
