REVIEW – Italian theatrical horror metal juggernauts DEATHLESS LEGACY return with their seventh studio album ‘Damnatio Aeterna’, out March 7, 2025 via Scarlet Records. Steeped in atmosphere and drenched in sacrilege, this concept album drags you into the infernal descent of a priest’s soul, entangled in a satanic wager led by the demon Malchrum. As always, the band delivers with flair, ferocity, and a flair for the dark and dramatic.
Opening with the title track “Damnatio Aeterna”, the band wastes no time unleashing a brooding, cinematic soundscape. Church organs swell behind Steva’s malevolent vocals as the story begins its descent. “Miserere” builds the tension with haunting melodies and pounding rhythms that sway and shudder with every line. The energy erupts with “Get On Your Knees”, an occult metal anthem that blends searing guitar riffs with ritualistic chants—pure fist-pumping blasphemy.
“Communion” pulls you deeper into the concept with a spine-chilling arrangement of keys and harmonies. “Indulgentia Plenaria” is pure theatrical horror metal magic—soaring vocals, shredding guitars, and a pulsing rhythm section that captures the band’s signature sound perfectly. “Oblivion” slows things down just enough to let the mood thicken, while “Spiritus Sanctus Diabolicus” flips the sacred on its head, turning Latin liturgy into a sinister incantation.
The dark journey continues with “Sanctified”, filled with spine-tingling melodies and a thundering mid-tempo groove. “Mother Of God” carries emotional weight beneath its gothic overtones, preparing the listener for the final act. “Nightshade” is atmospheric, brooding, and soaked in eerie keyboard textures that give way to the climactic closing track, “Gehenna”—a sprawling, near-seven-minute finale that’s equal parts cinematic, crushing, and unforgettable.
With ‘Damnatio Aeterna’, DEATHLESS LEGACY deliver not just an album, but an experience. From the conceptual storytelling to the visual artistry to the powerful performances, this is horror metal at its most unapologetic and refined. It’s dark. It’s twisted. And it’s absolutely unholy.
