âThink techy weirdness but even weirder.” â Decibel Magazine
Decibel Magazine is currently hosting an exclusive stream of See You Tomorrow Baby, the destructive, earworm-ridden debut LP from UK/US technical/avant metal duo WESTON SUPER MAIM, ahead of the albumâs release this Friday.
Emerging in the mid-2000s as a solo project from UK multi-instrumentalist Tom Stevens (All Of Space, Brown Stratos), WESTON SUPER MAIM fully sparked to life in 2020 when US-based vocalist Seth Detrick of Los Angeles thrash outfit PDP joined. Picking up where acclaimed 2021 EP 180-Degree Murder left off, See You Tomorrow Baby sees the band in full command of its singular brain-destroying sound. Drawing inspiration from the abstracted time signatures of Meshuggah, the groove and dissonance of Will Haven, and the god-tier riffs of Crowbar â not to mention the boundary-pushing musicianship of bands like Car Bomb and Humanityâs Last Breath â WESTON SUPER MAIMâs See You Tomorrow Baby is an expansive work of cutting-edge extremity.
With vocal recording handled by Seth Detrick and Tom Stevens, See You Tomorrow Baby was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Stevens, with additional recording/guest spots by Stace Fifield and Stuart Henley-Minchington (Blindfolded and Led To The Woods) who provide vocals to âAutistic Kill Trance,â Chad Kapper (Frontierer) who adds vocals to âPerfect Meadows In Every Direction,â and Ian Waye (Soreption) who provides an intense guitar solo to âThe Bare Maximum.â Binding it all together again is the work of UK collage artist JoyPolloi, whose asteroid-esque creation ties the front and back covers together, invoking interplay between ideas of hope and hopelessness â representing the final piece of the WESTON SUPER MAIM jigsaw.
Stevens reveals, âWe set out to make a record that goes beyond anything we’ve done before. It was a monumental undertaking â pretty much two years of living and breathing these songs â but I hope thatâs what weâve done. Seth has smashed the vocals way out of the park. His performance just elevates every track â I love all the little inflections and interesting articulations â and his lyrics are something else. Until 2023 we hadnât even met in real life, so being able to record parts of the album together in Oregon and London was incredible, plus heâs the worldâs nicest man. Working with Chad from Frontierer and Stace and Stu from Blindfolded And Led To The Woods was also a dream, and the solo from Ian of Soreption takes an already ridiculous track to an insane level. Iâm proud of every song on this album and I know thereâs nothing else that really sounds like this.â
Detrick adds, âFor me, this album is very special, technically, and lyrically. On one hand, I had to dig very deep to come up with a large amount of the vocal patterns because Tom decided he wanted to write a fucking calculus book. On the other, I had to unlock some very ugly moments from my past in order to convey our experiences with grief; things that Iâm not very comfortable with. I hope it translates well with our listeners and that anyone who has dealt with losing a loved one understands that you can use death to restart your life.â
Decibel Magazine calls the album, “WESTON SUPER MAIM are unveiling their debut LP, See You Tomorrow Baby, in all its weird and technical glory for you to stream… Think techy weirdness but even weirder.”
