“…Essence is an astonishingly assured collection with barely a whiff of artifice. Backed by former Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison and sometime Portishead drummer Clive Deamer, it’s still the Brown siblings’ crystalline voices and melodies that shine on ‘Without You’s brisk country-pop and ‘Intro The Crowd’s marching blues. At times, you can hear the ghosts of Fleetwood Mac and Corrs albums past. But when The Rua pitch into the simmering drama of ‘Hear Them Calling.’ it’s all their own work and comparisons fall away.”
–Mark Blake, Q MAGAZINE, October 2014
“Emotionally resonant and harmonically arresting, these siblings have put their best foot forward with their debut LP..
–Brice Ezell, POPMATTERS.COM, February 4, 2015
“The Rua’s Fleetwood Mac-like vibe, meticulous playing, tight harmonies and great songs will surely make them a band to watch out for in the coming months.”
–Emily Tan, DIFFUSER.FM, October 24, 2014
U.K. trio THE RUA—comprised of three Irish siblings—announces their debut album ESSENCE will be released in the U.S. via FOD Records on St. Patrick’s Day (Tuesday, March 17). The album’s first single “Fight For What’s Right,” an uptempo, string-laced song which merges the classically trained Windsor, Surrey-based group’s pop and alternative stylings, is now impacting Hot AC and Pop radio. The song’s music video, directed by Frank Borin, can be viewed HERE. ESSENCE will be available via iTunes and Amazon.
For a behind-the-scenes look at THE RUA, the third installment of a series of six track-by-track videos about the recording and writing of ESSENCE—exclusively premiering with POPMATTERS.COM—is up now with “Stand Out” and can be viewed HERE.
THE RUA—22-year-old Roseanna Brown (voice and guitar), 24-year-old Alanna Brown (piano and backing vocals) and 19-year-old Jonathan Brown (violin, guitar, vocals and backing vocals)–will perform select U.S. shows in the coming months (dates TBA). On the road, THE RUA trio is completed by ex-Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison and Portishead drummer Clive Deamer who’s also drummed with Radiohead, Roni Size and Siouxsie Sioux, among others.
“Fight For What’s Right” is a song that lyrically underlines the band’s independent sensibility. As they explain:
“We were in the studio and we had a problem with one of the songs we were supposed to do. It then got us thinking as a group, all those situations where you aren’t necessarily in control and you feel like you should stand up for what you want. That’s how the song started.”
The album digs into more deep and emotional themes with songs such as “Stand Out,” which the band says is “inspired by an amazing woman who was basically part of our family. She suffered from cancer for many years yet she always managed to look out for everyone else and worry about them with complete selflessness. She saw the best in you even if you couldn’t see it.” Lighter-themed songs, such as “Hear Them Calling,” tackles the common artist fear of forgetting lyrics when performing which Roseanna seemingly found a remedy to. The band explains, “‘Hear Them Calling’ was written because Roseanna doesn’t always remember the words to songs! She wanted to do a song with no words in the chorus. At the time she was watching the Alien trilogy which got her thinking about aliens and ta da! . . . ‘Hear Them Calling.’”
THE RUA have an interesting back story with strong theatrical layers. They have all appeared in the film Stormbreaker; Alanna has appeared in the film Closer as well as four Harry Potter movies; and Roseanna (who’s appeared in three Harry Potter films) as well as Snow White and The Huntsman and Thor. Jonathan’s appearances include in one Harry Potter film as well as Dark Shadows. The siblings each studied music at A Level, while Roseanna received a degree in Music from Royal Holloway and Alanna earned her Masters in Science. The diverse elements of their lives have helped shape the THE RUA’s ESSENCE.
