Ska Punk group The Scrub Ups debut their full length album titled, Thought Bubbles. Hailing from New York, The Scrub Ups are a collective of musicians and friends who love their counter-culture craft.
The band’s sound intentionally resists easy classification, fusing ska-punk roots with acoustic Americana, raw punk energy, and a sharp dose of dark, socially conscious humor. Instead of a single front person, they feature a mixed-sex lineup that is vocally democratic, using multiple singers to bring different characters and perspectives to life. Their instrumentation is equally unconventional for a ska-adjacent act, layering banjo, pedal steel, melodica, mandolin, and baritone guitar over a driving punk rhythm section and rich, roots-country textures.
The album opens with “Unlove You,” a catchy, high-energy track that blends rockabilly and punk with a country twist over a dance able beat. The momentum shifts slightly with “Enemies,” which opens at a slower pace; it explores themes of moving past conflict through a mix of twangy banjo, frenetic vocals, and upbeat percussion. Next, “The Scrub Up” delivers a fantastic throwback to the 90s ska scene—reminiscent of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones—featuring bouncy guitars, bright horn arrangements, and fast-paced drums. “Rubberneck” starts steady with banjos before diving into a fun, ska-infused groove that fully embraces the band’s playful sound. Finally, “See You All in Mexico” arrives as a ska-influenced sea shanty, perfectly crafted for a rowdy group sing-along.
Ultimately, Thought Bubbles is a thoroughly entertaining romp that absolutely lives up to the hype.
