“While researching 19th century Spiritualist works for our album The Last Great Awakening, I happened upon the book of poems ‘Asphodels’ by Sarah Gould (1856). I learned that the flower symbolized death, the afterlife, and mourning, which I thought fitting for our themes of seances and connecting with the otherworld as practiced in that era. The concept evolved into our own demon, Asphodelus, represented by the sigil on the cover. Melodically, I wrote the vocals on this song to be haunting and ethereal, while also commanding, drifting in and out of an invocation from one world to the next.” – Kim Dylla
“I had this moody instrumental, and Kim introduced the idea of centering it around the asphodel – a flower said to grow throughout the fields of the afterlife in Greek mythology. I immediately connected with the concept, and we took it a step further by naming The Burned Overâs horned demon mascot Asphodelus, drawn from the flowerâs Latin classification.” – Mark Dannells
Today, The Burned Over drop their newest single “Asphodelus” from their debut album The Last Great Awakening (released June 27, 2025).
Comprised of Kim Dylla (Cruachan, Ekktoplasm, ex-GWAR) and EMMY-winning, GRAMMY-nominated guitarist, producer, and composer Mark Dannells (Yacht Rock Revue, Butch Walker, ex-Skid Row), the duo ushered in the era of âBAPHOMETALâ with their gripping debut.
This dark sound, now brought into the light, has been meticulously crafted with alchemical precision over the past five years. Drawing from Victorian occultism and folk horror, their music embodies the balance between light and shadow, weaving stories of ethereal transcendence and corporeal decay.
At the heart of their artistry lies Baphomet, the symbol of unity in opposition, a guide through the labyrinth of contrasts: heavy and melodic, male and female, spiritual and profane. Their music transcends mere sound; it serves as a ritual, a haunting hymn to the eternal dance of duality. Each note acts as a sigil, and each lyric becomes a spell, weaving tales of mortality and cosmic chaos.
They are joined on The Last Great Awakening album by powerhouse drummer Beau Brandon (Withered), producer/engineer Raheem Amlani (a member of Arcadea with Brann Dailor), and producer/mixer Kevin â131â Gutierrez (Shinedown, Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash). Mastering was handled by multiplatinum engineer Chris Athens (Hollywood Undead, PVRIS, Coheed And Cambria). Together, theyâve crafted a sound as haunting as it is hypnotic – a dark hymn for the coming storm.
Following the release of the acclaimed The Last Great Awakening album, The Burned Over extended their sonic alchemy into new territory. On All Hallowsâ Eve 2025, they released âRasputin,â a haunting transformation of Boney M.âs 1978 disco classic, The standalone single was accompanied by video which premiered at Revolver .
About The Burned Over:
Kim Dylla:
When Mark Dannells first played me his compositions for The Burned Over, I was intrigued by their depth and originality. Over the past 25 years, I have been the singer for many Metal bands with a varied palette of styles. Honing a haunting and melodic vocal sound to weave throughout Markâs masterful guitar work has proved my favorite musical endeavor yet. Lyrically I mesh historical texts with the more universal occult themes ensconced in the Age of Spiritualism. After 5 years of musical gestation, Baphometal was birthed in the form of The Last Great Awakening, our violent and ariose hymn to the eternal dance of duality.
Mark Dannells:
Iâve worked as a bandleader, sideman, and producer on a wide range of musical projects over the years. The Burned Over is the culmination of those experiences, infused with my deep love for folk horror films and occult history. When I began writing for this project, Kim Dylla quickly proved to be the perfect creative foil – her melodic and lyrical contributions helped shape this introduction to BAPHOMETAL- The Last Great Awakening.
