Indie pop/folk/electro duo STRANGERS YOU KNOW has added two more stops to their 2016 festival circuit with back-to-back weekend performances at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, April 15-17 and April 22-24 in Indio, CA, as well as BottleRock Napa Valley, happening May 27-29 in Napa Valley, CA. As previously announced, the Los Angeles group will also perform at the HANGOUT Music Festival, May 20-22, 2016 in Gulf Shores, AL, and the Firefly Music Festival, June 16-19, 2016 in Dover, DE.
STRANGERS YOU KNOW is no stranger to the festival scene. In fact, the pair–Grady Lee (vocals, guitar) and Adam Haagen (piano, guitar, vocals, banjo, mandolin)–met three years ago by happenstance in the heart of the desert as attendees of the iconic Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Bonding over synths, beats, guitars, lyrics and melody, the foundation of STRANGERS YOU KNOW was born.
“Before becoming a band, we would both go to as many festivals as possible,” shares Adam. “Now it feels like a dream that we get to experience this magical event from the other side…literally…on stage.”
In addition to preparing for milestones in their live performance career, STRANGERS YOU KNOW is also hard at work in the studio putting the finishing touches on a new EP to drop Friday, March 11, just in time for the start of festival season. Music fans are getting a first glimpse into the new project as the debut single, “Used,” is streaming now on SoundCloud and will be released digitally Friday, January 15.
With their new EP, Grady and Adam continue to evolve. With every release, a new sound emerges. In the studio the two work in tandem; sure there are disputes about where a certain melody may go or if a lyric is right for a particular song but in the end, everything comes together perfectly.
“The past year has mostly been about reinvention for us, and we are excited to finally leave the laboratory and show the world the Frankenstein-like creations we’ve been working on,” Adam explains.
STRANGERS YOU KNOW takes inspiration from many different sources, each member bringing their own color to the group. Adam, a native of West LA, and Grady, a Santa Barbara local, draw onmany different influences ranging from folk to rock to pop to electronica. Their sound represents everything that they’re feeling in the moment.
“It’s not this giant group of pop ideology of other people telling us what we need to be,” Grady adds. STRANGERS YOU KNOW do everything themselves from the songwriting to the recording. It’s their music and no matter how much it grows and shifts it will always belong to them. But more importantly, it belongs to the listener.
STRANGERS YOU KNOW wrapped up 2015 by releasing two new songs dubbed Pre/Post“Queen Of Venice Beach (Oowee)” and “Shoot Me Down’–available for a limited timeas free downloads via their SoundCloud. The two tracks showcase the pair’s range and versatility musically, while also aligning together lyrically to share a complete story about the complexities of young love. A lyric music video for “Queen Of Venice Beach (Oowee)” premiered via their Hangout Festival webpage. It has since been seen nearly 40,000 times; watch it now here.
