âThe unfiltered anger here is very much palpable, and very much appreciated.â â Everything Is Noise
âThe Judgeâ is the new video from Durham-based MAKE, now playing exclusively at Everything Is Noise. The song marks the latest single from the bandâs mammoth fourth LP, Exegesis At The End Of Time, nearing June 12th release on Accident Prone Records.
A decade after their praised Pilgrimage Of Loathing LP, MAKE now delivers Exegesis At The End Of Time, once again elevating their place in the genre. The expansive Exegesis At The End Of Time sees the founding duo of guitarist/vocalist Scott Endres (Horseback, The Pod, SUNTAN) and bassist/guitarist/vocalist Spencer Lee (Systems, Vanishing Point) welcoming John Crouch (Horseback, Caltrop, Vanishing Point) and Aaron Smithers (In The Year Of The Pig), making them a four-piece for the first time since their 2010-released debut EP and expanding the band’s cacophonous palate. On this album, they combine a diversity of influences in building both the music and the concept for the record. Droning repetition, angular noise rock, and massive sludge riffs coalesce to underpin literary themes spanning Pynchon and DeBord to Borges and McCarthy, forging a warning: The order that rules our world represents a cosmic violence that will destroy us if we don’t conquer it.
Recorded at The Fidelitorium, produced and mixed by Kris Hilbert (Between The Buried And Me, The Body, Centuries) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Deadguy, Locrian), the art and layout for Exegesis At The End Of Time was handled by the bandâs Scott Endres. Those who immerse themselves in the works of Old Man Gloom, Mouth Of The Architect, Rosetta, The Atlas Moth, Rwake, Isis, Amenra, Neurosis, and other encompassing sludge/post-metal acts are advised to hear MAKEâs Exegesis At The End Of Time.
The video for âThe Judgeâ was created by video artist Kellen Smith, who writes, “What should a MAKE video look like? Neither the band nor I wanted to make something that heavily featured the band, but I did want a way to have a grimy, distorted, ethereal version of the band represented. With the daily invasion of AI slop in to every moment of our lives, we took the band as it exists, used a couple of lights, a camcorder, and a pile of analog video gear and CRTs to create a space that was a dreamy antithesis of the modern world.”
Spencer Lee reveals, “On top of the human propensity for brutality, I think Judge Holden represents that same aspect of the universe writ large and how we experience it as humans. No matter how devastating the circumstances, how many deaths, how much hardship exists, the uncaring universe keeps on dancing.”
With the premiere, Everything Is Noise writes in part, âMAKE arenât here to fuck around, but you and I surely are doing a lot of finding out during âThe Judge.â Psychedelic visuals and acutely pummeling sonics nearing grating levels of rage have rarely felt as fitting of an escape from the day to day as they do here… MAKE are able to do something that plenty of their peers fail at and fall pale before, and Iâm all about that signature dish cooked up of abrasive tones that make the decibel meter blink red stroboscopically and the rough and obese grooves that match a ship capsizing in scope. The unfiltered anger here is very much palpable, and very much appreciated.â

MAKE has been creating thematic psychedelic noise-sludge since 2008. Drawing on themes of isolation, loss, hope, absurdism, and cataclysm, what started as a space-doom project has since evolved into something far more varied and expressive. During that time the band has been a significant presence in the regional music scene, performing on diverse lineups from Bull City Metal Fest to Hopscotch Music Festival, and touring with a wide range of extreme acts including Crowhurst, Dragged Into Sunlight, Primitive Man, and more.
In 2016, MAKE joined forces with Accident Prone Records for the release of Pilgrimage Of Loathing, which received praise from fans and the media alike. The Quietus wrote, “MAKE conjure a sound that is just as experimental as it is rooted in the brutality of sludge/doom.â Stereogum proclaimed, âUncontrollable anger aside, there are plenty of moments of pure contemplative beauty, when picked guitars delicately intertwine in zen-inducing ways over feathered drums.â
