Stackâs Bowers Galleries to Auction Exclusive Paul McCartney Coins on Behalf of The Royal Mint
Each Coin Comes with a Signed Certificate from Paul himself
Stackâs Bowers Galleries, one of the oldest and largest rare currency auction houses in the world, is honored to once again partner with The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom for an auction sale of exciting British numismatics. Presented in a special auction on March 19, 2025, will be a bespoke set of Presentation Edition gold and silver coins honoring Paul McCartney, one of the most acclaimed icons of music and pop culture.
Struck in 5 kilogram formats, these magnificent treasures deliver an incredible visual appeal that is matched only by their rarity. Just one gold and four silver pieces are available for collectors, and they will be presented exclusively through this Stackâs Bowers Galleries auction.
Paul McCartney is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and composer who first rose to international prominence as a member of The Beatles, one of the most influential and successful bands in music history. Acclaimed for his melodic bass playing, versatile vocal range, and prolific songwriting, McCartney’s influence spans generations. Quite simply, Paul is either your favorite musician or he is your favorite musicianâs favorite musician.
In honor of his indelible impact on culture and society, The Royal Mint worked directly with Paul McCartneyâs production company, MPL Communications, and with Paul himself to develop a truly exceptional coin release. Hand crafted with care and precision under the guidance of Royal Mint CEO Anne Jessopp and the Kingâs Assay Master Daniel Thomas, these are some of the rarest and most inspiring pieces to emerge from The Royal Mint in the modern era. When asked how it felt to be commemorated on such a coin, Paul McCartney responded, âThis feels like a huge honor. Itâs not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.â
The gold 5 kilogram piece represents the largest gold Proof coin produced as part of The Royal Mintâs Music Legends series. It took more than 250 hours to make, including three days of polishing. Hand-signed by Paul during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris, it is a truly unique and inspiring treasure like Paul himself. In addition, the winning bidder will receive a short video from Paul McCartney congratulating them on their acquisition.
Only four of the silver 5 kilogram pieces exist in this Presentation format, excluding a fifth example that was gifted to Paul. Like the gold counterpart, these silver coins are the largest silver Proof coins in the Music Legends series and reflect the first time Paul has been honored on a British coin.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, âThis is an exciting opportunity for collectors and fans of Paul McCartney to own a unique item celebrating one of the most influential music artists and songwriters of all time.
âEach coin available at auction is a testament to the exceptional skills of our craftspeople at The Royal Mint. Taking hundreds of hours to produce, the masterworks crafted from gold and silver feature highlights from Paulâs career and his journey to becoming one of Britainâs most successful artists in history.
âThe impressive 5 kilogram gold coin has also been hand signed by Paul during his âGot Backâ tour at the end of last year â a symbol of his personal seal of approval of these iconic one-of-one pieces.â
Each of the Presentation coins is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Paul McCartney himself. Every one of these represents a crowning jewel for a world-class collection of British coinage or music memorabilia. Additionally, Paul and The Royal Mint will be donating a percentage of the revenue from this auction to charity, which means that buyers will acquire a historic keepsake while also contributing to a good cause.
This joint-effort between Stackâs Bowers Galleries and The Royal Mint comes on the heels of several similar partnerships between the two organizations in recent years, including a sale of special Royal Succession coins that realized $5.1 million in August 2023 and an auction of First Strike coinage that realized $1.8 million in October 2024.
Brian Kendrella, President of Stackâs Bowers Galleries stated, âIt’s an incredible honor to be working with Paul McCartney, MPL Communications and The Royal Mint in bringing such rare and iconic works to public auction. Paul McCartneyâs timeless music and multigenerational appeal continue to inspire and unite fans across the world, making this a memorable event that all can enjoy.â
Stackâs Bowers Galleries is proud to have been selected by The Royal Mint to auction these special Paul McCartney silver and gold 5 kilogram coins and is excited to present them to the collecting community on March 19, 2025.
