INFRARED MAG: Ray, your musical style is truly distinct and captivating. Can you take us on a journey through the experiences and influences that have shaped this unique musical identity of yours?

RAY NOIR: Growing up in Norway, I was surrounded by the Black Metal, Goth, and Industrial scene, which really shaped my music. Hanging out with icons like Gothminister, Mortiis, and Mayhem left a mark, and you can hear their influence in my sound. It’s not just music; it’s a reflection of those moments and the inspiration they brought.

INFRARED MAG: ‘Scorpio’ is a compelling release that explores a range of themes and emotions. Could you delve deeper into what inspired the creation of this project and the specific themes it delves into?

RAY NOIR: “Scorpio” is all about my zodiac sign and the challenges of growing up queer in Norway. It delves into the struggles I faced before leaving for Paris and then London. It’s a journey through the shadows of the mind, exploring the ups and downs that have shaped my path.

INFRARED MAG: Your music beautifully blends genres, a hallmark of your artistic style. Could you provide insights into the thought process behind this genre fusion, particularly in the context of ‘Scorpio’?

RAY NOIR: My music is a mashup of my eclectic influences, everything from my upbringing tunes to the vibes of the cities I’ve called home. It’s not a calculated thing, it’s just me being a restless soul. One day, I’m blasting Slipknot, the next, I’m listening to Lady Gaga and Madonna. And when the weekend hits, you might find me at some underground techno rave in London. It’s a wild ride, but that’s just how I roll.

INFRARED MAG: The creative process often comes with challenges. Could you shed light on the hurdles you faced while producing ‘Scorpio’ and the strategies you employed to overcome them?

RAY NOIR: Being an indie artist has its hurdles, and the major one’s always the money struggle. Handling everything solo, reaching out to producers, teaming up with writers, guest artists, booking gigs, and contacting press, it’s a 24/7 gig. But you know what? Wouldn’t swap it for the world. When the whole team clicks, it’s a fantastic process. We brainstorm, throw around ideas, and eventually create something that tells the story I had in mind. Hopefully, it resonates with folks worldwide.

INFRARED MAG: Balancing raw, visceral emotion with technical skill is a defining aspect of your music. Can you elaborate on how you strike this balance in your creative process?

RAY NOIR: I usually begin by figuring out what I want to talk about in my songs. After that, it’s all about the music, creating the beats and melodies. Once that feels right, I dive into writing the lyrics and melodies. It’s like putting together a puzzle, with each part fitting in to tell the story I have in mind. This process just works for me, and it helps me express myself in the most genuine way.

INFRARED MAG: Let’s focus on the standout tracks from ‘Scorpio,’ such as ‘Pity Party’ and ‘Lonely King.’ Could you share the creative journey and inspirations behind these particular tracks?

RAY NOIR: These two tracks hold a special place for me, they’re like my musical babies. Yet, they were the toughest to pen down because they took me back to a time I’d rather forget. “Lonely King” delves into the realm of depression, the struggle of not fitting into society, and how, over time, you kind of get accustomed to it. It’s like becoming the ruler of your own lonely land. On the flip side, “Pity Party” explores the mind, echoing the sentiment of ‘I don’t wanna be saved, I wanna live in my delusions.’ Each word in these songs reflects a piece of me, raw and unfiltered.

INFRARED MAG: Your artistic journey has evolved, culminating in the release of ‘Scorpio.’ How does this release reflect your growth and progression as an artist compared to your earlier work?

RAY NOIR: For sure, Scorpio feels real and honest, like letting it all out. It talks about the stuff your mind goes through growing up in certain situations. “Double Trouble” was more about partying, having a good time, while “All Alone” was more about heartbreak. The songs on Scorpio tell my life story, a part I needed to share for some closure. Each song is like a piece of my own journey.

INFRARED MAG: ‘Scorpio’ undoubtedly carries powerful messages and emotions. What message or experience do you hope your fans take away from this release?

RAY NOIR: I just hope when people listen to my music, they can feel something and maybe find some comfort. Dealing with depression is tough, and I’ve found solace in music. I want my music to do that for others too, to make them feel something real and let them know they’re not alone. The world is fucked up enough as it is.

INFRARED MAG: Your personal life, including experiences like homelessness, has played a significant role in your music. How have these experiences specifically influenced the storytelling and emotional depth in ‘Scorpio’?

RAY NOIR: I went through a tough patch, about 8 months of being homeless when I was working on Scorpio. I didn’t have much of a choice, but luckily, some good friends let me crash on their couch. It was the only way I could wrap up the record, especially during the final stages of Scorpio.

INFRARED MAG: Looking ahead, how do you envision the evolution of your sound and music in the future?

RAY NOIR: Absolutely, only time will tell. I’m already diving into some new projects, and we’ll see where the future takes me.

INFRARED MAG: Collaboration often plays a pivotal role in artistic growth. How have collaborative efforts contributed to the richness and depth of ‘Scorpio’?

RAY NOIR: I’m all about collaboration. Being a solo artist doesn’t mean I’m going solo in everything. I’ve got an amazing team of creatives, producers, co-writers, and guest artists. Together, we bring out the best in each other, making sure the message and the music align with what I envision. It’s all about that collective creative energy.

INFRARED MAG: Your music is an amalgamation of diverse influences. Could you share some key artists or genres that have significantly shaped your sound, and how do these influences manifest in ‘Scorpio’?

RAY NOIR: Gothminister, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Robyn, Nine Inch Nails, TR/ST, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and club music.

INFRARED MAG: Maintaining authenticity in your music, rooted in personal experiences and influences, is essential. Can you elaborate on how you ensure this authenticity remains a core aspect of your artistic expression?

RAY NOIR: Just stay authentic to who you are. Each artist brings their own flavor, and that’s what makes the music scene diverse and interesting. We’re not here to reinvent everything, but to inspire and support each other in our creative journeys. So, keep doing your thing!

INFRARED MAG: Live performances are a significant aspect of your artistry. Could you share your approach to translating the energy and emotion of your studio recordings into your live shows?

RAY NOIR: Live shows are my realm; that’s where I truly come alive. For me, it’s all about connection and letting out the pent-up energy and anger. The stage is like a release, a place where emotions flow freely. It’s that moment of shared intensity with the audience, a cathartic experience where we’re all in it together. I feed off that live energy, and it’s where the raw, unfiltered essence of my music takes center stage.

INFRARED MAG: Navigating the music industry while preserving artistic integrity can be challenging. How have you managed to strike this balance throughout your career?

RAY NOIR: I’m all about putting in the work and having a good time! When someone says “No,” I see it as a challenge to prove them wrong. Life’s too short to let obstacles hold you back. Work hard, play harder—that’s the way to go!

INFRARED MAG: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations on the horizon that you can share with us?

RAY NOIR: I’ve got some exciting stuff cooking. Teaming up with a Grammy Award-winning legend, we’ve got a song dropping before summer. Also, inked a deal with an American label for a release this spring or summer, and there’s a fresh EP in the works. Plus, watch out for some remixes and a cool collab with my mate Tom Saint hitting the scene on Feb 23rd. Lots of vibes coming your way!

INFRARED MAG: As an artist with a unique journey, what advice would you offer to aspiring artists who look up to your work and are navigating their own creative paths?

RAY NOIR: Everyone’s got their unique approach to art and music. My advice? Believe in yourself because, truthfully, no one else will do it for you. Fight for your place, it’s yours as much as anyone else’s. Don’t let the music industry bring you down. Nowadays, you can achieve so much on your own. It might be harder work, but the payoff is worth it in the end. You’ve got the power to carve your own path.
