âFrom those dissonant and emotionally fracturing sounds, itâs easy to imagine a nightmare of the sun blotted out forever, perpetually frozen in place behind the moon. But the sky brightens again; the musical catastrophe slowly spends itself; rough tones pulsate, and then vanish; the music becomes slow, gentle, and grieving againâ¦â — No Clean Singing on âLive Totalityâ
No Clean Singing is currently streaming, Live Totality, the latest EP from Cleveland-based bringers of dark, apocalyptic metal, AXIOMA. The premiere comes in advance of the EPâs official unveiling this Friday, December 6th, on Stained Glass Torments
Live Totality was born from an idea to play a live set during the total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024. Instead of playing a live âset,â the band decided to compose and perform a piece of music to coincide with said eclipse in real time. Spanning a dense fourteen minutes, these moments during the history of this earth were chronicled to sixteen tracks by the band live on the shores of Lake Erie in Lorain, Ohio. Attentively mixed and mastered by Noah Buchanan (Midnight, Ringworm, Shed The Skin) at Mercinary Studios in Avon, Ohio, AXIOMA decided that the massive historical sonic documentation should indeed be shared with the rest of the world. In June of 2024, AXIOMA entered Mercinary to track two more brand new compositions for the studio recordings to complete what is the Live Totality EP.
Writes No Clean Singing, â[The track, ‘Live Totality’] reminded me of my own humbling experience in the presence of a total solar eclipse years ago, and made me wish Iâd had this music as my soundtrack then. This AXIOMA soundtrack is a slow and unsettling build toward intensity, one that lasts for 14 1/2 minutes. Patience is required as the song moves toward the apogee of darkness and then emerges on the other side, but it will be rewarded… From those dissonant and emotionally fracturing sounds, itâs easy to imagine a nightmare of the sun blotted out forever, perpetually frozen in place behind the moon. But the sky brightens again; the musical catastrophe slowly spends itself; rough tones pulsate, and then vanish; the music becomes slow, gentle, and grieving again… A cynic might surmise that the three tracks that follow that monumental one on the EP are ‘filler,’ calculated to plump up the run-time to something more substantially deserving of a vinyl release. Instead, it sounds like the darkening experience of the eclipse followed AXIOMA around and wouldnât let go of them until they did more, like some compulsion that needed a catharsisâ¦â

AXIOMA released their first aural assault in the form of their Opia EP courtesy of Tartarus Records in 2016. Based on the success of Opia, the band teamed up with the revered Translation Loss Records for two critically acclaimed LPs: Crown in 2019 and Sepsis in 2022, with Crown also released on cassette via Hibernation Release. Late 2022 brought a percussion change in the lineup with Nick Amato stepping in to accompany original members, Cyril Blandino (guitar), Justin Meyer (guitar), and Aaron Dallison (bass, vocals). With a fresh invigoration the band released the Primal Descent EP in 2023 under their own Stained Glass Torments imprint. Wrote MetalSucks of the release, âOnly four tracks long, the dark themes span the depraved and the hopeless, taking on topics like human folly and uncontrollable technology. Throughout the songs on the album, AXIOMA keeps it heavy and creates a vibe for the entire release, but they also tell a cohesive story about the imminent downfall of humanity.â
