Their latest album, ‘Chains,’ is a product of inspiration drawn from bands like DRAB MAJESTY and SOFT KILL, it stands out as their most emotionally charged and meticulously crafted work to date. INFRARED MAG: Hello and thanks for answering our interview. Could you introduce the band to our readers with a brief background?
SUPERNOVA 1006: The band was formed in September 2014 in the city of Khabarovsk. Later we moved to St. Petersburg and are currently here. We perform synth-wave, post-punk, cold-wave, but sometimes we experiment!
INFRARED MAG: What was the inspiration behind the latest release?
SUPERNOVA 1006: The creation of chains was inspired by the work of such bands as Drab Majesty, Holygram, MRD and Soft Kill
INFRARED MAG: Are your songs created mostly the same way or does the process differ for different tracks?
SUPERNOVA 1006: I usually start by sketching out drafts in GarageBand; then I transfer the project to the computer and rework it taking into account the main idea.
INFRARED MAG: What, in your opinion is the mark of a good remix?
SUPERNOVA 1006: In our opinion, this is an emphasis on beat and bass.
INFRARED MAG: These days short-form videos and consistent content in variety are two of the biggest trends in music promotion. What do you see in the future of promotion?
SUPERNOVA 1006: This is very difficult to predict. We don’t like what’s happening in promotion right now. To make everything much better, it is worth emphasizing live recording. The musicians have lost contact with real instruments in favor of vst. This, of course, simplified the work, but also significantly reduced the quality of the semantic component of modern music.
INFRARED MAG: What sets the latest album apart from previous work?
SUPERNOVA 1006: This is the first album that took several years to record. It was revised and rewritten. In my opinion, this is our most emotional work of all time!
INFRARED MAG: Would you go back and do things differently on a previous album if you had the opportunity?
SUPERNOVA 1006: Yeahhhhh! Certainly! But I won’t tell you where hahaha. There are several such works and of course I would like to bring them together again. But the material has already been lost and we will not be able to do this 🙁
INFRARED MAG: How important is storytelling in songs and videos to you?
SUPERNOVA 1006: Storytelling occupies the most important place in our works! There’s the main story and then there’s the track design. It is very important that these two concepts do not diverge, otherwise the feeling from the story itself will not be the same. In Chains we put maximum emphasis on this. Therefore, the album was rewritten several times.
INFRARED MAG: Touring these days, it has been said is especially challenging for artists at least in terms of making a profit. What do you think it will take to turn that around and make it easier?
SUPERNOVA 1006: A musician should ideally have a close person who would handle all aspects of the tour. This should not be an outsider. The group itself should handle business, settlements, and negotiations. Only in this case will it be possible to achieve the desired financial results. But I believe that selling merchandise also plays a significant role in making money.
INFRARED MAG: Do you have a vision for how the new material will be represented in a live show?
SUPERNOVA 1006: Hard to tell. We constantly rehearse and hear how we sound in the studio. But ultimately it all depends on the stage and the engineer. Therefore, it is almost impossible to predict such things as live sound.
INFRARED MAG: What have you planned for the forthcoming months?
SUPERNOVA 1006: Now we are focusing on creativity. And we are already recording new material that we will release after the new year!
