Baltimore-based DARSOMBRA presents a new LP titled Syzygy, released to the public today, following its surprise unveiling at last weekendâs DARSOMBRA Presents: Transmission â A Celebration For Ann Everton festival.
The two-day festival event took place at Baltimoreâs Ottobar on February 28th and March 1st. The gathering was established to honor the life and art of DARSOMBRAâs Ann Everton, who tragically passed away in a vehicle accident in early October when the band was beginning their latest tour. The gathering featured twenty-eight artists across two stages, with sets from Stinking Lizaveta, Acoustic War On Women, Curse, Consumer Culture, Moth Broth, 50â
& The Worms, Quattracenta, Holy Fingers, Celebration, Cultic, and many more. DARSOMBRAâs founder and Evertonâs husband Brian Daniloski made his return to the stage for the first time since the accident, performing with both Ala Muerte and Gridfailure.
During this incredible but bittersweet gathering of friends, Daniloski unveiled the new album Syzygy, which was one of the multiple albums DARSOMBRA was in the process of completing at the time of Annâs passing. These tracks were culled from the massive amount of material the band recorded at their home, Whale Manor â a.k.a. the DARSOMBRA Mothership â during the initial COVID shelter-in-place lockdowns of the early 2020s. Many of those recordings were turned into the Dumesday Book double album and its companion piece, the Call The Doctor/Nightgarden maxi-EP. Some were earmarked for a less heavily composed and layered album. Something looser, minimal, more experimental. Others were archived to be considered for future releases. Constant touring for Dumesday Book and newer, more ambitious projects pushed the minimal/experimental album to the back burner until now. Szygy is dedicated to the memory of Ann Everton.
Produced by Brian Daniloski, mastered by Jon Smulyan, and fitted with artwork by Katy Clark, Szygy now makes its way into the public sphere for all to hear.
In a gracious message to everyone who took part in the Transmission event, Daniloski wrote in part, âIâm basking in the glow of the love and feeling of community from this past weekend. That was some powerful stuff. You all lifted me and each other up, and it was so needed. A live music/art event bringing all sorts of people together from different genres of the music scene for something fun and weird and meaningful, and in the middle of a cold-ass winter, when a lot of us have been hibernating in our homes since the holidays, would have been exactly what Ann would have wanted.
âThank you to everyone that came out. Thank you to all of the bands that played. Thank you to the Ottobar and all of my helpers. They brought this idea to me at a time when I couldnât even think straight and it gave me a focus. It kept me busy and productive during what was, and still is, a very challenging time, and I can’t thank them enough. I knew this event would probably be pretty special, but it far exceeded my expectations. Who knows, maybe I’ll put together something like this again someday.â
Szygy is out now on LP, CD, and digitally on DARSOMBRAâs own Pnictogen Records. Stream and purchase the album now at Bandcamp RIGHT HERE.
