As alternative/avant rock project WALKING BOMBS prepares to release its new album, Spiritual Dreams Above Empty Promises, in early April, today, New Noise Magazine is premiering a video for the new single, âShadow Mouth Says.â
WALKING BOMBS is the alternative/cross-genre act created by Morgan Y. Evans. The first of several new WALKING BOMBS records to be released in 2023, Spiritual Dreams Above Empty Promises is an album about trying not to lose hope and to remain centered despite the world’s sorrows and perils. It was written following the passing of Evansâ mother and deals with topics ranging from mortality, spirituality, individuality, gun violence, love, cynicism, freedom of choice, spectator apathy during conflict or bullying, overcoming doubt, and even being startled awake by technology. It is for people trying to remember that cynicism is not as powerful as our deeper hopes, dreams, and empathy.
Spiritual Dreams Above Empty Promises was recorded before Evansâ recent move to Southern California. The record, along with a corresponding sister album, was created in Rhinebeck, New York during the majority of 2022 at engineer and multi-instrumentalist Ash Umhey’s forested studio Orange Sound, engineered, recorded, and mixed by Umhey. It’s a reconnecting of sorts between old friends after years of growing up and participating in the late-1990s/early-2000s fertile Hudson Valley alternative music scene together.
Evans played more instruments than ever, with a large contribution of material from Umhey, drummer Justin Zipperle (Shadow Witch), Elizabeth Gomez Dapena (Globelamp, ex-Foxygen), and cameos from many other friends, including members/alumni of The Chrome Cranks, The Stabbing Jabs, The Alchemy Unit, Prince Rama, The Natural Lines, Matt Pond PA, Meowtain, Gridfailure, Talon, 5rvln5, Kore Rozzik Band, and more, largely recorded at the collaboratorsâ respective home studios. Septa’s Eugene Tymchyk even sent a spoken word contribution from amidst war-torn Ukraine. The symbolic cover art was created by NYC visual designer Julia Popescu.
“Shadow Mouth Says” sees Diondra Primus, Ash Umhey, and Peter Aaron joining Morgan Y. Evans, the video for the song shot and edited by Umhey, who writes, “The song âShadow Mouth Saysâ is one of those tracks thatâs sneakily unconventional. The meat of it is a Stooges-esque bass groove with our friend Peter Aaronâs super-overdriven, anarchic guitar playing on top. Amazingly, he came in and nailed it on the first take. I was a bit skeptical when Morgan asked me to add the Rhodes, but I kept it simple to just reinforce the groove, and it all worked very well together. Making the video for this song was a blast too. Anytime you get to dress up, play with fire, smash a guitar, and hang out in an old cemetery is going to be an interesting and memorable day.”
“This song is about nagging voices in your mind filling you with a myriad of doubts, as played perfectly by Ash and Diondra in the video,” states Evans. “How do we turn our fears into fuel or lift people up when they are down and need some validation? Sometimes it is literally a matter of life or death. It was really fun to have rock scribe and musician Peter Aaron come in and lend his howl and vortex of masterful guitar skronk to the tune, the first time I believe he ever tracked through an Orange.”
