ââ¦a unique psych-punk hybrid that is absolutely fascinating and engaging.â â New Noise Magazine
New Noise Magazine is premiering âShitical Darlings,â the new single from California-based WALKING BOMBS, preceding the release of Blessings Bestrewn Part 1, the first in a two-part album sequence.
WALKING BOMBS is the ever morphing and prolific collaborator magnet/solo project of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Morgan Y. Evans. Blessings Bestrewn Part 1 arrives in the projectâs busiest year to date, yet stands out among the recent rash of mixtapes, EPs, and singles as a more orchestrated and complex project. The record was largely recorded in upstate New York in 2022 prior to Evansâ relocation to California, after which it was slowly refined and completed over many months.
A bi-coastal effort that took three years to complete, Blessings Bestrewn Part 1 is the first part of a double album, color coded into two parts like Guns N’ Roses famed Use Your Illusion era. This album sees Evans performing electric and acoustic guitars/basses, trombone, and lead vocals. The record also features a wide cast of collaborators including members/alumni of Book Of Wyrms, Gridfailure, Shadow Witch, Globelamp, Chrome Waves, Cycle Sluts From Hell, Geezer, Stormland, Black Mesa, The Alchemy Unit, and more.
Blessings Bestrewn Part 1 was co-produced by Ash Umhey and Morgan Y. Evans, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Umhey at his Orange Sound in Rhinebeck, New York, and completed with cover art by Elizabeth “Lizzie” Gomez Dapena and Morgan Y. Evans. The guest contributorsâ recordings were handled by the respective artists, and random DIY/unorthodox recording tactics were used in several instances, including vocals recorded in a shower. One song was even written in 1993 by Evansâ first Woodstock grunge band Melancholy yet was never recorded.
“Shitical Darlings” sees Evans on vocals, bass, and shaker, with guest vocals by Elizabeth La Fey Dapena (Globelamp) Ash Umhey (The Alchemy Unit) on guitar and organ, and Justin Zipperle (Shadow Witch) on drums.
“This song was cathartic for Elizabeth and I to sing. Everyone knows some pompous band or another who think they walk on water and look down on people or who double down if they have done something messed up and get called on it,” says Morgan Y. Evans. “The title ‘Shitical Darlings’ is self-explanatory. People keep kissing the arses of flawed assholes too often who don’t deserve it as if they are the second coming of Christ and then wonder why people’s egos are the size of the Hindenburg. Well, remember what happened to that!”
“Mainly this song ironically combines Minutemen influences with Smashing Pumpkins influences; Justin and Ash really nailed the music,” Evans continues. “I thought it ironic to have a less heralded yet heroic band paired with a not humble at all band that have a singer who is way too into himself, as a contrast. It is really just about unapologetic people who don’t grow but somehow skate on by.”
New Noise writes, âOpening with a stomping rhythm and borderline-psychedelic melodies on an electric guitar, the song explodes once the rhythm picks up making for a unique psych-punk hybrid that is absolutely fascinating and engaging.â
