Unveiling Authenticity: An Exclusive Interview with LINDSAY JORDAN on "Say Anything" and Her Musical Journey

At just 25 years old, singer-songwriter LINDSAY JORDAN has already made an indelible mark in the world of rock and blues. With influences ranging from Janis Joplin to Alanis Morissette and Melissa Etheridge, Lindsay has captivated audiences with her powerful vocals and authentic storytelling. Her journey began at a young age, performing with her family of musicians, and in 2021, her debut EP Silver Strings introduced her raw talent to the world. Now, with the release of her latest single “Say Anything,” Lindsay continues to inspire listeners with her heartfelt music.

We had the opportunity to sit down with LINDSAY JORDAN to discuss the inspiration behind her new single, her creative process, and how her musical journey has evolved since her debut.

INFRARED MAG: Lindsay, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your new single “Say Anything”?

LINDSAY JORDAN: My inspiration for Say Anything was actually fictional, unfortunately. As a single woman mingling in the dating scene, I sometimes write songs about what I would like to have in my life in the future. Sort of like a manifestation song. That’s how Say Anything came about for me.

INFRARED MAG: Your music often touches on personal experiences and emotions. How does “Say Anything” reflect your own life and journey?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I’ve struggled a lot with relationships and finding the right person or people in general in my life, friendships included. I wrote say anything about the kind of love that I would like to have in my life. The kind of love that is just easy and makes everything easier because you don’t have to do it alone.

INFRARED MAG: What was the creative process like for “Say Anything”? Did you face any challenges while writing and recording the song?

LINDSAY JORDAN: The song started out with a guitar riff that a friend of mine, Eduardo Zancanaro, played for me that he had written. I thought it was beautiful and asked if I could make a song out of it, and the song kind of flew out of me from there. Like it was just waiting to come out! I came up with the first line of the song first with melody and lyrics, and I believe I wrote the song pretty much in chronological order how you hear it! That rarely happens.

INFRARED MAG: Can you share more about the production of “Say Anything”? Who did you collaborate with, and what was the experience like?

LINDSAY JORDAN: The production/engineering of the song was done by Wayne Alan Becker. Guitar work by Chris Holland, Piano by Rick Repsher and other instruments by Wayne. It’s always hard for me to picture a production on a song that I wrote acoustically, but I love how Wayne shaped the song. We had some minor challenges and disagreements over how the snare drum should sound (lol), but we came to a common ground, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

INFRARED MAG: Your songwriting is known for its emotional depth. How do you approach writing lyrics that resonate so deeply with your listeners?

LINDSAY JORDAN: What a kind thing to say! I do try to keep in mind what will be pleasing for my listeners, however, I mostly just write from my heart. Writing songs is therapy for me. It helps me to take something that’s weighing on my mind and put it to use somehow. It makes me so happy that what I write can be relatable to others and hopefully give them a little piece of my therapy.

INFRARED MAG: How has your music evolved since you first started, especially since your debut release ‘Silver Strings EP’ in 2021?

LINDSAY JORDAN: Well, the Silver Strings EP was written mostly when I was ages 16 through 19, so I think a lot has changed being that was a decade ago! I wrote Get Tough when I was 16 and recorded it when I was 18. My voice has matured a lot since then, and my writing has improved in my opinion!

INFRARED MAG: Can you tell us about any memorable moments or experiences from your live performances?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I had the opportunity back in 2021 to warm up the stage for Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) and David Bryan (Bon Jovi) at the Count Basie Theatre. That was the moment that I decided to go full force into performing my original music and creating my band. I’ve only recently started performing with my band members and we have had an absolute blast. I’m sure the best memories are yet to come!

INFRARED MAG: How do you stay inspired to create new music, especially when dealing with the pressures of the music industry?

LINDSAY JORDAN: It definitely can be difficult to find time to be creative with my busy schedule, but I try not to force myself. I tend to go through phases where I write a lot, and then phases where nothing is coming to me. I love to take little road trips, just me and my dog. A lot of times a break from my usual helps to spark some inspiration!

INFRARED MAG: Who are some of your musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?

LINDSAY JORDAN: Sheryl Crow was my first music crush… I absolutely adored her music from when I was a little girl until now, and she made me want to be a singer when I was about 6 years old. Other influences over the years have been Alanis Morissette, Janis Joplin, Heart, Joni Mitchell and many other female musicians. Of course, the Beatles and other classics that I grew up on and learn from every day musically and lyrically!

INFRARED MAG: Your fans are incredibly supportive. How do you engage with them, both online and offline?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I’m very lucky to have such a supportive fanbase. I always say, come to a show and make sure to say hi! One of the coolest feelings ever to me is meeting someone at a show who has been following online. My top followers have also gotten perks like free merch, and handwritten appreciation letters in the mail!

INFRARED MAG: What can fans expect from your upcoming projects or releases?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I am at work in the studio now and hoping to have another release or two coming up before the end of 2024! The releases will continue, I have many more songs that the world hasn’t heard yet. I’m also looking forward to some great shows lined up in NYC including The Bitter End and The Bowery Electric this year.

INFRARED MAG: How do you balance your personal life with your music career?

LINDSAY JORDAN: It’s not always the easiest, but I’m very lucky that the people in my life love music. My friends and family come to see me play and support me A LOT. I always make time for things that are important, family first always.

INFRARED MAG: Can you share any advice for aspiring singer-songwriters who are just starting out?

LINDSAY JORDAN: Keep going!! Network, network, network.

INFRARED MAG: What role does collaboration play in your music, and are there any artists you dream of working with in the future?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I typically write my songs by myself with the exception of a couple, but I’ve had the privilege of working with so many incredible musicians in the studio that I call friends. My current band members, Zach Schwartz, Nick Quartapella, and Ryan Lewis have been so great to collaborate with. When I write a new song, I bring it to them to develop, and they totally see my vision every time. I dream of collaborating with so many musicians, so that’s a very hard question to answer! I’d have to say Jackson Browne for one. He is possibly my favorite lyricist of all time. I love male/female duets, and I’d love to work with Johnny Rzeznik again as well.

INFRARED MAG: How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I see big things on the horizon for myself and my band. We are hoping to do a USA tour in 2025 and reach more listeners around the country. The opportunities have been piling up more and more!

INFRARED MAG: What message do you hope to convey through your music?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I write a lot about my relationships, from love to break ups, struggles with finding myself, trauma, and women’s empowerment. I hope to inspire other women and young girls specifically to be strong, keep their wits about them, and follow their heart. For any listener, I hope that my songs make them feel less alone in this world where we are all struggling to some degree.

INFRARED MAG: How do you prepare for your live shows to ensure each performance is unique and memorable?

LINDSAY JORDAN: My bandmates and I are very close, and we have a ton of fun coming up with cool ideas for performances! My motto is that if we are having fun, the crowd is going to have fun. All of us are multi-instrumentalists, so we love to switch instruments to keep things interesting, get the crowd singing with us, and free merch giveaways.

INFRARED MAG: Can you tell us more about the themes and stories you explore in your songs?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I typically write from my personal experiences, but occasionally, I write something like my song “Dear Alice” which hasn’t been released yet. That one I wrote about Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. Anytime I have a strong feeling about anything, it’s likely that there will be a song about it!

INFRARED MAG: How has your background and upbringing influenced your music?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I grew up in a family of musicians, so I was born into this crazy life! I’m very grateful to my dad, a psychologist with a passion for the bass guitar (and previous profession), for teaching me about good music from a young age. My Mom sang me the Beatles, Elton John, Kenny Loggins, Stevie Wonder and others since birth. I’ve been performing with my Dad and Uncles in their bands since I was 6 years old. I’m lucky to have a family who supports me in the difficult career path that I’ve chosen and has pushed me to follow my dreams my whole life.

INFRARED MAG: Finally, what would you like to say to your fans and supporters who have been with you on this journey?

LINDSAY JORDAN: I’ve got big dreams, and it takes an army for them to come true. They come true more and more every day because of you! Peace and love to you always.
