“‘Back From the Dead’ is a song about taking your life back,” the band says. “Fighting the darkness of depression, the lost of love or a love one, or feeling like your spiritually dead and trying to find your heart again.”
“Back From the Dead” will appear on Reach NYC’s new EP, out in 2021 via The Orchard. Watch this space for more.ABOUT REACH NYC:
Reach NYC (formerly known as Reach and then Reach 454) were formed on Long Island in 1996 by ex-Sick of It All bassist Richie Cipriano, who switched to guitar. The band included vocalist Rene Mata, bassist Dan Martinez, drummer Dante Renzi, and guitarist Nick Cavagnaro. Reach were active on the New York scene, gigging frequently with future notables like Papa Roach and System of a Down, and playing Warped Tour. Lava/Atlantic president Jason Flom signed them after a label showcase performance. The band entered the studio in 2002 with producer Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Evanescence) and emerged in the summer of 2003 with their self-titled debut. The band disbanded in 2004… but the story didn’t end there.
Before his own band had gotten signed, Mata orchestrated L.A.-based band Kara’s Flowers signing to burgeoning label Octone Records. The band eventually changed their name to Maroon 5 and released the mega debut Songs About Jane. Ultimately, once Reach disbanded, the singer got his first A&R job at Columbia Records, kicking off a successful behind-the-scenes career. He went on to work at various record companies and now manages producers at AAM. He has worked with the likes of lovelytheband, Dreamers, Albert Hammond, Jr., POD, Bass Drum of Death, Nevrlands, Ocean Park Standoff, Des Rocs, and more. He also worked nights as the head doorman at infamous NYC hotspot Cabin Down Below.
Throughout the years, Chester Bennington, a close friend, encouraged Mata to keep playing music. The last time the friends were together in NYC, they enjoyed a dinner with the members of Papa Roach, Matt Sorum, Marcos of POD, and Rob Caggiano from Volbeat. Bennington presented the idea of a tour with Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Deftones, System of a Down, and Papa Roach, with Reach NYC serving as the opener. Sadly, Bennington passed away and these plans did not materialize.
The loss had a profound effect on Mata. He went on to A&R and executive produce a release by Bennington’s first band Grey Daze. But he still felt the loss of his friend in a deep way.
In 2019, friends encouraged him to put Reach NYC back together to open for POD in NYC. It was the band’s first show since 2004 and it quickly rekindled their friendships and love of music. In 2020, Reach signed a deal with the Orchard. An EP is planned for early 2021.
Ultimately, Reach NYC’s story is one of redemption. All the members moved on to other projects over time. But collectively they realized that no matter what road they were on, they were remained quite a force as a unit.
