RAIN DROPS, the new EP from PAPER DIAMOND, is officially out today (March 6) as a free download via PAPER-DIAMOND.COM. The four-song EP stemmed from the idea of “mind over matter”; being able to control your surroundings with your brain.
“I’ve always liked the idea that anything is possible if you set your mind to it and when doing some research on that concept, I read about people that believed they could control the weather,” says PAPER DIAMOND. “I may not be able to control the weather but I like to think that music can take you to your own world; somewhere that you can control all your surroundings. Sometimes when making or listening back to music, I see images and it translates into my music and visual art.”
PAPER DIAMOND spent a majority of 2014 on the road and would often start concepts while traveling; he recorded in studios in Los Angeles, London and on the tour bus. Those ideas were taken back to the studio and refined working in lyrics and vocals. “The process was always different and I was trying to create many different vibes and ideas throughout the release,” he says. “I never really like to use the same sounds twice and don’t hold myself back from exploring new territories in music and production.”
The Colorado-raised and Los Angeles-based electronic producer lead with “We Gone” featuring Shoffy—which first premiered via Majestic Casual–to introduce his new music. “Instead of announcing the new EP with a track that people would expect from me, I decided to release ‘We Gone’ to show people that it’s all good to be different.” Adding, “Yes, I have a lot of new heavy hitting music, but I also want to change things up. I’m a musician at heart and always want to keep it fresh.”
It paid off as the song received high praise from the critics and fans alike upon its release last month with Dan Cooper from EDMSauce.com noting, “I was pleasantly surprised when I was hit instead with the down-to-Earth vocals of Shoffy paired with some catchy synths that didn’t overwhelm the overall majestic feel that Paper Diamond was shooting for…Paper Diamond is among the many artists these days trying out new genres. I fully support Paper Diamond on this new track!” (2/10/15). Dancing Astronaut’s David Klemow adds, “The Colorado-bred producer is a chameleon in the studio with a production style that is nearly impossible to typify…Paper Diamond always has something new under the hood. Leading off his forthcoming EP, Paper Diamond is offering a fresh departure from anything he’s done before with ‘We Gone.” Linking up with vocalist Shoffy, Paper Diamond draws on R&B and jersey club influences for the new track…Shoffy’s bedroom-primed lyrical work is arranged perfectly across the tune, from light, melodic verses to short, smooth loops in all the right spots” (2/16/15).
Earlier this week, another new track from the EP, “Take Me Away” premiered via This Song is Sick, who claimed “PD steps into new territory bringing in some elements of future bass with his beat centric brand of trap for a seamless combination” (3/3/15). Describing the song “Gotta Wake Up,” LA Canvas says “aside from being a unique artist bringing a zoomed-in electronic flavor to the decks, energy is inspired; catchy vocals, experimentation and synths are some of the few elements that give our earbuds and magazine headquarters—aka deadline zone—a well worth click on repeat” (3/5/15).
The RAIN DROPS EP is just a small taste of the music PAPER DIAMOND has been working on over the past year and he’s already well into recording another release. Expect a ton of new releases and projects in 2015. Until then, download the new EP for free and check out PAPER DIAMOND on the road while you can. His massive 34-date U.S. “Rain Drops Tour”—which kicked off January 14—will wrap up tomorrow March 7 in Chicago followed by select shows in San Francisco (3/12) and Los Angeles (3/13) before heading off to Europe. A festival favorite, PAPER DIAMOND is also slated to appear at the Euphoria Festival in Austin, TX this April and Wakarusa in Ozark, AR in June as well as an upcoming performance at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre July 2 with Zeds Dead and Dillon Francis.
