REVIEW – YELAWOLF and J. MICHAEL PHILLIPS have created something genre-bending, soul-splitting, and undeniably authentic with their collaborative album ‘Whiskey & Roses’. Released via Slumerican, this 10-track record is a southern-fried journey through pain, perseverance, and purpose — blending hip-hop grit with country soul in a way that breaks barriers without ever feeling forced.

Opening with “Helping Hand,” the album wastes no time establishing its tone — introspective, unfiltered, and wrapped in acoustic warmth. The chemistry between the two artists is immediately clear: Phillips brings his raw, emotionally bruised storytelling to the forefront, while Yelawolf drops sharp verses that feel like they’ve been lived, not written. There’s a sense of redemption woven into the track, setting the stage for what’s to come.

The single “I Swear” stands as the spiritual cornerstone of the album — an outlaw anthem soaked in southern gothic vibes, wrestling with addiction, identity, and the fight to escape the past. It’s one of the strongest tracks on the record, with a hook that hits like a scarred prayer whispered over moonshine and mistakes. The production is tight, minimal, and cinematic — allowing every lyric to breathe.

Amnesia” is haunting. Yelawolf takes lead here, delivering a performance that balances bravado with brokenness. The song’s premise — pouring your soul into someone who forgets you ever mattered — is universal. The beat shimmers with subtle R&B tones, giving it an emotional weight that lingers.

Tracks like “Falling” and “Honey Hole” lean more into J. Michael’s country roots. The former is drenched in acoustic introspection, while the latter brings the tempo up with an infectious rhythm that feels like a summer backroad drive. It’s this variety that makes ‘Whiskey & Roses’ so impactful — each song explores a different emotional pocket, but the album never loses cohesion.

Giddy Up” is where the project dips into its most playful territory. A honky-tonk-meets-trap stomper, it’s a barroom banger built for late-night stages and neon signs. In contrast, “Searching For Heaven” returns to the reflective core of the album, with both artists trading verses about temptation, regret, and the cost of faith. It’s a deeply personal moment, and one of the best written songs on the record.

Yay Yay Yay” featuring Struggle Jennings is a country rap posse cut done right. There’s bravado here, sure — but also a sense of kinship and lived-in truth. The three artists complement each other perfectly, each voice telling a different version of the same story: survival.

Big Trucks” and “All I Ever Seen” close out the journey with back-to-back statements of identity and legacy. The former is pure swagger — custom rides, country pride, and no apologies. But it’s the latter that hits hardest. J. Michael Phillips delivers the final word, a solo cut that cements his place as a rising force. “All I Ever Seen” is deeply personal, reflecting his journey from incarceration to inspiration.

Throughout ‘Whiskey & Roses’, you can feel the dirt under the boots, the weight of the past, and the fire in both men’s voices. There’s vulnerability, but also defiance. Beauty, but also brutality. And like the title implies — life is both.

This album is a love letter to the forgotten, the fallen, and the fighters. It’s urban outlaw gospel, and it might just be the most important country-rap collaboration of the year.
