REVIEW – Ottone Pesante are to music what The Lighthouse is to film. This cd is a journey into some dark abyss that I am not even sure I am out of yet. This is an all brass band that creates mental scenery in their music that is so obscure and uncertain. I have to jump straight to the third song off the cd, Tentacles. I want to think of this as the 2020 answer to White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. In the place of Grace Slick is Sara from Messa. This song is such a mystery and as it slows down it actually feels like it is getting heavier. It feels like swimming in a black fog and sinking while staying still. Distress is another song that just comes out of nowhere. This is a trip into a rabbit hole that you feel is unsafe but cannot stop falling down. This song showcases what experimentation and unsafe is all about. This is a song that has no borders and is not out to appeal to masses but a certain few. I feel this cd will get a bad rep from most metal fans. This is not a metal album. This has metal elements in it but it does not have enough to classify it as a metal album. Though track 8 “Stormbacea” can be seen as a metal song in the vocal delivery.
The best way to describe this cd is mood music. Most of this cd sounds like music that can score an art house film. I feel Jazz listeners would find more to embrace with this album than a hard rock fan. The thing is that after I stopped listening to this cd, I found myself wanting to hear it again. This is a band that is off their meds and wants to paint the world in this sound that will creep up on you and swallow your imagination if you let it. This is Crystal Castles depressed cousin. To be honest, I am not sure if this music is supposed to be uplifting or sad. It is a challenge just to understand what they are throwing at me at times. To put this music into words is like describing a blow job to your sister. I think if Timothy Leary heard this cd, he would need even more psychedelic drugs. I have to say though, this cd is something so unique and special. It is far from perfect, but this band is not out to be perfect. They are out to change music and exist. This cd changes how I look at brass instruments and how when creative people put their minds to it, can create a soundscape that makes you truly come out of your environment and get thrown into their world.
