LO BRITE on the filming of “Sunset”:

“Much of my time living in L.A. has been defined by these amazing sunsets.  It’s an event that happens every day, this beautiful ever-changing display that we all see. You see them from the car, office window, bed, park, production set…wherever you happen to be. In many ways it connects us, it’s part of living in beautiful Los Angeles. My director J.Alba and I started having discussions on how to best present my song ‘Sunset.’ From the beginning we knew it would be a performance video and we loved the idea of finding a perch in the city to profess this sexy song amidst sunset.  As fate would hold, we found a piano hidden above the 10 freeway!  My director called me and said, ‘I found our location, we may get arrested during the shoot…but I found a location and there happens to be piano there.’ On the day of the shoot, we got to the location and we knew we had to work fast.  Our DP Matthias Schubert decided to shoot entirely hand-held with a steady cam and full takes.  After the first take, the gate at the end of the bridge swings open–It was previously pad-locked–and we all shutter thinking, ‘ah, shit…we are done!’ Suddenly two teenagers come strutting across the bridge towards us with a ring of keys.  My director immediately runs to the center of the bridge to stop them, at which point they let him know, ‘this is our bridge.’ As we came to discover, they had placed the piano out there and this was their club. They didn’t much appreciate us being there.  However, we all quickly shifted gears to keep it peaceful and respectfully asked to shoot on their bridge. Turns out, the teenagers, Julio and Andy, were very kind and super cool. They allowed us to remain on their bridge and hung with us while we’ll shot, which we loved.  And how perfect, we have this location above the freeway where we all experience so much of our lives in the car. There’s a catharsis that sets in after years in L.A. I’m singing this sensual song with the whole city flowing under me, there was this crazy energy floating up, with constant horns and people screaming. It was a special experience. We owe big thanks to Julio and Andy for sharing their bridge with us.”

LO BRITE was produced and recorded with Tim V. Hutton in the musically historic and mystically laced twists and turns of Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon at The Canyon Hut studio which is co-owned with his brother Dash Hutton (drummer for HAIM).  The EP was mixed by Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Ryan Bingham, Johnny Cash) at Plyrz studio and mastered by Richard Dodd (Gavin DeGraw, The Lone Bellow, and Iron and Wine) in Nashville. LO BRITE captures a landscape contrasting darkness and light, transporting gentle and unrestrained melodies into baroque style pop.

Praise for LO BRITE:

“…unrestrained melodies on her latest…‘Runaway.’”

“Get lost into the sweet, soulful soundscape that is the EP debut of pop artist LO BRITE, whose classic minded vocals will win your heart over…a brilliantly arranged introduction to the very well versed vocalist…within the opening bars of ‘Sunset,’ she delivers sultry passion while showing off her malleable pipes by hitting beautiful notes. The instrumental is a smooth, unrestrained accompaniment that carries her modulations magnificently…from the slow burning first half to the third track ‘Runaway,’ the emotions range across the spectrum, on this anthemic arrangement she sounds empowered, ready to take it all on but only slightly wistful what’s behind her, feelings of regret countered by hope for the road ahead. The closer ‘Know When To Quit’ contrasts when we see Atkins’ voice turn into a more ethereal tone, this delicate voice that sounds very close to tears with every cadence. Here she expresses disappointment that is followed by bitter acceptance, the heavy hearted ending to this EP is possibly one of its prettiest moment.”

ABOUT LO BRITE:

Originally from the heartland of Indiana, LO BRITE grew up in gospel church.  Her father, a pastor, would mash the keys of an out-of-tune upright piano in their dining room while her mother sang gospel tunes alongside. Early in her childhood, LO began listening to albums by Nina Simone, Otis Redding, Carol King, Donovan and Michael Jackson. Her interest in music led her out of Indiana, to the bustling cityscape of Chicago, and then to Los Angeles. LO BRITE was born from a collection of songs written on a Casio keyboard while living in a Los Feliz cottage.  In 2012, LO began making amateur recordings and performing acoustic shows, launching her path as a recording artist and the release of LO BRITE.
