HOAX, the Brooklyn-based empathy pop rockers, today (8/31) has released their high-energy and quick-hitting new single, “Moon Moon Baby.” The song marks the lead single from the band’s forthcoming debut full-length album b?, due late 2018 (exact date TBA). Click here to listen to “Moon Moon Baby” which highlights the band’s trademark “empathy pop” style of writing and production and delivers raspy-yet-silky vocals that initiate a driving melody.
SPOTIFY EMBED CODE TO SHARE “MOON MOON BABY”:
“We had been in India, ‘the land of be,’ for about ten days, and it was enough time for us to take our limited and privileged perspective on ‘how things worked’ and completely break it down,” Mike Raj (vocals) says of the inspiration behind the album. Raj adds: “We were taking in so much knowledge about what it meant to ‘be’ – and it started to stick. Not long after, and in 45 minutes, I wrote all the lyrics to ‘Moon Moon Baby.’ It’s the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this deeply fleshed out concept of ‘being’ that we explain on our debut album.”
‘b?,’ set for release in late 2018, is built from an internal awakening and understanding induced by the culture found during the band’s trip to India. The album takes on a deep concept and theme–something HOAX tend to do: what is our being?
Throughout b?, HOAXRaj (vocals), Frantz Cesar (bass), Paul Brower (guitar), Kevin Lopez (guitar), and Jacob Lopez (drums)-experiment with elements of pop, R&B, and hip-hop and layer those influences under their alternative and indie-soul roots. The band’s sound is as eclectic as its members with a mix of Indian, Puerto Rican, Haitian, Ecuadorian, Irish, and Italian blood all in one group. The hyper-diverse band has also become noticed for their trendy and fashionable style, tenacious DIY mentality, and their strong sensibility for humanity. The band’s approach in songwriting perpetually explores intricate yet convoluted themes from empathy to racism in America to the afterlife and seeks to promote meaning through their music.
The band have two EP’s notched into their belt already, The Truth and Other Lies and words that end with wh(y), both from 2017, in addition to a handful of singles, all which have a strong showing in the streaming world. Currently, the band’s “Beach House” (their debut single from 2016) has nearly 800,000 Spotify streams and “Indian Summer” has garnered over 300,000 Spotify spins. These are just a couple of their most popular songs out of six on the Spotify platform that each have over 100,000 spins logged; Impressive for a band that was formed three years ago in the halls of Hofstra University during 2015.
