In November of 2024, The Lasers Edge released Hiding In Plain Sight, the debut from HERIN â the progressive/post-rock solo venture of Tiles/Discipline guitarist Chris Herin â the record stacked with guest performances from Peter Frampton, members of Rush, Jethro Tull, Porcupine Tree, Discipline, and many others. Following its release, the album was released on vinyl for UK Record Store Day featuring four additional bonus tracks, which have now been issued digitally on The Lasers Edge as the Unhidden EP.
The elaborate limited UK Record Store Day 2xLP 180-gram edition version of Hiding In Plain Sight includes four bonus songs placed throughout a totally revamped 15-track running order. Featuring additional artwork and photos courtesy of Hugh Syme, the audio is mastered using RealFeel â a unique process which makes digital recordings feel closer to analog. To not disappoint fans who wish to grab only the bonus songs, they have been conveniently bundled together as a digital EP creatively titled Unhidden. By no means leftovers, these tunes were held back solely to keep the original album (CD) under 60 minutes.
The four bonus tunes all feature Discipline’s Matthew Parmenter on lead vocals, and Discipline drummer Paul Dzendzel joins on “Our Own Time.” Of note is a significantly altered version of “Safe House (Asylum).â The songâs lyrics offered a couple of arrangement possibilities, and not knowing which path to take, the solution was to do both! Additional guests on board are Kevin Chown (bass), Ben Riley and Gary Craig (drums), Hugh Syme (keyboards), and Mark Mikel (backing vocals and mellotron). The short, poignant instrumental was written during the waning days of Herin’s hospital vigil and named after the room number.
Proceeds from Hiding In Plain Sight will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A conceptual work recounting Chris Herinâs difficult walk alongside his fatherâs ten-year struggle with Alzheimerâs disease, HERINâs Hiding In Plain Sight combines distinctive prog and art rock influences that alternate from sophisticated orchestral arrangements and polyrhythmic complexity to contrasting cinematic soundscapes and ambitious guitar workouts. The album is a bold and adventurous fusion of musical palettes as the distinguished roster of guest artists propels HERINâs songs into inspired and expansive directions.
HERIN teamed up with renowned producer Terry Brown (Rush) and Grammy award-winning mastering engineer Peter Moore (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell) who give Hiding In Plain Sight a luxurious and dynamic sonic landscape. For the attentive and patient music enthusiast, each listen gradually reveals the albumâs cache of nuanced and subtle details. Complementing the reflective and occasionally disquieting lyrics is Hugh Symeâs (Rush) whimsical and engaging imagery, the artwork capturing the albumâs sensibilities of time and place for a compelling and enigmatic visual counterpart.
Lending their exceptional talents to Hiding In Plain Sight is an impressive cast of nearly thirty musicians, including Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame members Peter Frampton and Alex Lifeson (Rush), plus Martin Barre, John OâHara, and Doane Perry (Jethro Tull), Michael Sadler (Saga), Kim Mitchell (Max Webster), Cody Bowles and Kevin Comeau (Crown Lands), Jeff Kollman and Shane Gaalaas (Cosmosquad), Tim Bowness (No-Man), Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree), Randy McStine (Steven Wilson), Kevin Chown (Tarja, Chad Smith), Matthew Parmenter (Discipline), Hugh Syme, Johnathan Blake (Kenny Barron), Ben Riley (Mohsen Namjoo), Gary Craig (Bruce Cockburn), David Barrett, Jimmy Keegan (Spockâs Beard), and many more.
â…Herin’s strongest quality here is his touching introspectiveness… Hiding In Plain Sight is a richly and impactful debut…â â Prog Magazine
ââ¦Hiding In Plain Sight is an exceptional album, containing a broad mix of progressive rock styles⦠a fine solo album that will hopefully help Chris Herin to deal with the aftermath of a heart-breaking situation, as well as providing food for thought for us all.â â The Progressive Aspect
âThe arrangements are great (Herin really is a great songwriter) and it’s interesting how he wrote the entire album yet let his guests really shine here. It’s sound less like a solo album and more like a collaboration that makes his concept come alive. Well done by all!â â Sea Of Tranquility
“An impressive personal story of loved ones struggling through the inhumane degeneration that is Alzheimer’s disease. A very personal and deeply sad experience brought to life with an intense whirling blend of intricate lyricism and music emphasizing the emotions of love and despair. Looking outside and gazing into the world of our surroundings, it is an album that brings me solace amid the agony of an enduring farewell.â â Headbangers Lifestyle
âHiding In Plain Sight isnât just a prog-rock album, itâs an album that deals with hardship of moving forward after we leave this earth, knowing that we will never see our loved ones again. It has the powerful prog-rock influences Herin has unleashed to prove all of the views and difficult momentum he had to go through by taking care of his dad. Not just having the weight on his shoulders, but pouring his heart and soul throughout the entire album.â â Echoes And Dust
