Ghost Cult Magazine is hosting the premiere of a new video for âKoru Mindset,â the latest single by German psychedelic blues/post-rock outfit GAVIAL. The song precedes their new Thanks, I Hate It LP, nearing release through Exile On Mainstream
GAVIALâs new material is deeply shaped by the cultural, social, and political realities of our time. The album title itself captures the bandâs pointed response:Â Thanks, I Hate It. A reaction to a world burning; societies fueled by hate; technologies drifting away from serving humanity; militarism rising once again; human rights ignored or unrealized; institutions riddled with corruption; and individuals claiming the wealth of all for themselves.
Recorded by GAVIAL in their band rehearsal space, Thanks, I Hate It was mixed by the bandâs Benjamin Butter â who also created the cover art and videos for the record â and was mastered by Bernard Camillieri at Xekillton Studios, Malta.
With the new âKoru Mindsetâ single/video, the band relays, âUnfortunately, the Koru Mindset seems to be a very successful mode of operation in this reality. After all, why should I not get a new superyacht for around half a billion dollars! No one can seriously doubt that there is a problem with how global wealth is distributed. Billionaires and Techbros expand their wealth as well as their political influence year after year. Often, they are praising the free market and fair competition as the reason why they got so wealthy, but is this competition fair at all?
âThe song is driven by the underlying narrative that there is no fairness if you just buy everything that you need to win and succeed increasingly: âWhoâd knew you win the race / With the fastest car?â
âRhythm and tempo are more reminiscent of a happy and uplifting song. At first glance, this is a stark contrast to the lyrical theme. But more and more it becomes clear that this probably is what is going on in your favorite billionaireâs head: happy days while planning your next commercial space flight with your wealthy friends.â

Nearly three years have passed since GAVIAL â formerly known as Tourette Boys â released their VOR LP with an updated lineup. Since then, the band â guitarist/vocalist Benjamin Butter, drummer Conrad Brod, bassist Paul Kollascheck, and guitarist Paul-Willy Stoyan â has been operating from the BerlinâDresdenâLeipzig triangle. While most songs on VOR were already written by the time Kollascheck joined the band, the focus afterward shifted: writing together as a four-piece and allowing the bass to become a more active force in shaping the music.
The results of this intense creative period can now be heard on GAVIALâs new album, Thanks, I Hate It. Here, the band stretches its fingers in many different directions. The opener, âControl,â takes a minimalist approach, concentrating on fusing diverse soundscapes. With âKoru Mindset,â the band ventures into up-tempo territory for the first time, driven by beat and rhythm at its core. In contrast, âGrowâ taps into a more classic blues feel, while âPretenderâ and “Leviathan” dive into long, sprawling psychedelic jams. The track âWandernâ offers a reinterpretation of an older band song â a piece that further highlights how seamlessly the quartet now works together. The album closes with a cover of Chris Isaakâs âWicked Game.â
