THE OCEAN will be touring in support of their Holocene full-length, released last year via Pelagic Records. With Holocene, THE OCEAN has become more intimate and captivating musically, while creeping deeper into their own DNA with numerous references to their earlier discography which older fans will cherish.
Listening to the album brings back familiar feelings: that wide open spaciousness found on the second half of the bandâs Pelagial offering; those dark subdued delay-soaked melodies lingering underneath the aquatic surface all unmistakably carry the trademark of guitarist Robin Stapsâ ingenious writing â but there is also a new emphasis here: the distortion on the guitars is dialed back in favor of radiant synths and horns in every song, and Loïc Rossettiâs charismatic vocals remain mostly clean.
The result is an eclectic album showcasing a palette of sounds that is wider than ever in the history of the collective, an album that hails the riff and Reznor-style bit-crushed vocal extravaganza as much as it bows to Radiohead, as in the stunning third track âSea Of Reedsâ with the albumâs strongest vocal hookline â or early 2000âs trip hop, such as in âAtanticâ and âSubatlantic.â Additionally, The Massive Attack influence is obvious and makes more sense than you would have ever guessed within the context of this band.
Holocene was recorded entirely by the band themselves at synth/percussionist Peter Voigtmannâs studio Die Mühle in the rural North of Germany and at the bandâs own Oceanland 2.0 studio in Berlin.

“Holocene delivers the most varied, restless, and experimental music the Ocean has yet recorded — especially as they lean into electronic music.” — AllMusic
“The dichotomy between crescendo and lull is nothing new to The Ocean, and even while Holocene arguably sits overall on the quieter side, it’s no less enthralling, never heavy for the sake of it and still as forward-thinking as ever.” — Distorted Sound
“By incorporating more electronic elements â as well as the elegance of Park â into their customary yet perpetually alluring recipe, the band has fashioned another immersive journey that’s absolutely haunting, courageous, and essential.” — Metal Injection
