At sixteen years old in the Summer of 2013 I set out to make the dream game I wanted to play with my friends: Unturned. Seven years later it is still my passion project for Windows PC, and now 505 is bringing an edition to Xbox One! Over the years the game has expanded with dozens of maps, hundreds of new features, all with the help of a vibrant modding community.
Unturned is a sandbox survival game where you set your own goals, so almost any feature can be included in one way or another. As the developer this has been a lot of fun because I have been able to build in elements from all my favourite games, and experiment with tons of different ideas.
One of these aspects I am proudest of is the Coalition questlines on the Russia map. The Coalition is an international team of NPCs fighting against the zombie outbreak and offer quests you can complete solo or in multiplayer with friends. There is even a dark secret quest reaching into the depths of the metro… These NPC features were further used in the modder-created Greece map (included in the Xbox One edition) to offer multiple competing factions you can align with.
I have too many other favourite features in the game to describe them all in this post, so I will quickly list some of them: There is two-way walkie-talkie item voice chat. You can arrest anyone with handcuffs. Almost every object you see can be destroyed, especially when driving planes, trains, boats, and cars. Once you build and fortify your own base you can defend against hordes of zombies for rare loot. Gather protective equipment to brave the radioactive deadzones, and contest supply airdrops against bandit players.
One huge benefit of the Xbox One version by 505 is complimentary dedicated server hosting. You can create your own private dedicated server in-game to play with your friends for free with all the technical management handled automatically. I have always wanted a feature like this on the PC, but as a free-to-play game it is prohibitively expensive.
Growing up I loved to play split-screen, couch co-op games with my friends and family, so I am excited to see it added to the Xbox One version. Personally, I prefer to play split-screen on Xbox One rather than desktop PC because it is so convenient to just turn on the TV and hop into the game.
I hope you like the Xbox One version of Unturned so far, and I am looking forward to continuing development of the game in the future!
