Rising English rock trio TORUS drops their critically acclaimed eponymous debut today via MNRK/Inside Job. The record focuses on the trials and tribulations of growing from your teens to your 20s; love, loss, and feeling fucking weird. The album addresses issues such as paranoia (âCrash Waveâ), mental health (âDownfallâ), addiction (âSpeed Trialâ), and a good old-fashioned break-up song (This Feeling).
Following previous singles, âThis Feeling,â âWhen It Comes,â and âInto The Clear,â which was featured on BBC Radio 1âs Alyx Holcombeâs Introducing Rock show, Kerrang Radio, and Radio Xâs playlists, Kerrangâs Tracks Of The Week, and âAvalanche,â which instantly compelled audiences as TORUSâ most adored track, (over 300K streams and 100K monthly listeners on Spotify to date) the band announced their self-titled debut album, working with much-loved producer Thomas Mitchener (Frank Carter/Gallows, The Damned, Wargasm, Noahfinnce) and mastering engineer Grant Berry (All Time Low, Hot Milk, Busted).
Comments vocalist/guitarist Alfie Glass âThe sound of TORUS is one that we aim to take simple, catchy hooks with good songwriting at their heart, and then make them heavy. I think TORUS is the best version and clearest realization of that aim that weâve ever achieved.â
TORUSâ every move to date has been met with intrigue and acclaim â ahead of the lauded debut EPÂ Sail, key tastemakers in the shape of Kerrang! and Classic Rock were championing their âbrand of zero-bullshit hard rockâ that delivers âgargantuan riffs and thick, monstrous groovesâ in the vein of rock greats such as Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Smashing Pumpkins. Indeed, if the name Alfie Glass sounds even more familiar to you, itâs probably because Black Sabbath guitar legend Tony Iommi was praising the six-stringerâs chops on TV talent show Guitar Star when Glass was just twelve years old.
Having started life as a one-man bedroom project, TORUSâ lineup would soon be completed by bassist Harry Quinn in 2020 and, later, drummer Jack Orr in early 2022, the trio coalescing around a shared desire to create music that could bang heads while moving feet, despite their differing musical backgrounds and influences that touch on everything from desert rock to psychedelic prog and punk. âWe all come from different places but have a shared vision for the music we want to write,â Orr notes.
Their rapid, dizzying ascent has not come without its challenges, however, and TORUSâ aptly self-titled debut album stands as a document of and testament to surviving a time so trying that it would have broken up many lesser bands â a ârollercoaster of emotions and struggles from a year which had many ups and downs and the mental battle of trying to work it all out whilst feeling isolated and disconnected to things close to you,â as the trio put it themselves.
