New Music Review: JANE’S ADDICTION ‘Lollapalooza 1991’

REVIEW – In the 80’s, the music scene was wide open for bands to come in and make movements and get people excited about the next wave coming. Jane’s Addiction are one of those bands that had to exist. I can remember hearing their debut record on college radio and having to rush to a record store and get the cassette. Perry Farrell is one of those musicians that is out to create memories. The music was not enough, Perry had to start a festival called Lollapalooza. The goal was a musical orgy that was getting more younger minds to register to vote. In 1991, a festival that had so much diversity in music and views under one big umbrella was unheard of. ( Well, there was a few one off shows, but a touring festival?) This cd focuses on the show that was played in the 16th of August at the Lake Fairfax Park in Washington. This cd is basically a bootleg of the full set on that day. The sound quality is fair. The vocals come across very raw and at times aggressive. Dave’s guitar sound at time is muddled. Ain’t No Right is the best example of that. Mountain Song and Stop are very well done. You can feel the excitement of the band, but the crowd you really cannot hear. So, the live feeling is sort of lost. Summertime Rolls, features a rant by Perry which becomes boring very fast. It ruins the feeling of the song. I am a huge fan of the band, and I can forgive some of the audio issues. I feel that the band would have been better off releasing a dvd or blu ray as a companion to this.
