REVIEW – Denver’s HEL HATH FURY storms onto the melodic death metal scene with From Ashes, a blistering EP that fuses crushing heaviness, intricate melodies, and unrelenting energy. The band brings an impressive mix of technical proficiency and raw aggression, but what truly sets this release apart is the vocals. The interplay between mid-range growls, guttural lows, and piercing high-pitched shrieks adds depth and contrast, making every track feel dynamic and unpredictable. Paired with thunderous bass, punishing drums, and razor-sharp riffs, the EP delivers an immersive and relentless sonic assault.
The EP kicks off with “End of Humanity”, a haunting and atmospheric introduction that builds tension before exploding into a whirlwind of tremolo-picked guitars and rapid-fire drumming. The eerie clean guitar passages in the opening moments give way to a full-force attack, with vocals seamlessly shifting between guttural lows and searing highs, making for a gripping start.
“Garmr” takes a more aggressive approach, instantly launching into a pummeling riff assault that showcases the band’s technical prowess. The rhythm section is relentless, with crushing double bass and churning bass lines driving the track forward. The vocals shine here, alternating effortlessly between primal growls and banshee-like shrieks, ensuring that the track never stagnates. This is easily one of the heaviest and most ferocious moments on the record.
“Imperial Game” (feat. Narcissa) introduces a guest vocal performance that brings an extra layer of intensity and contrast. The track leans into melodic death metal’s signature interplay of brutality and melody, balancing soaring guitar leads with devastating breakdowns and guttural growls. The guest vocals provide an eerie, almost haunting backdrop to the main vocal assault, making this track one of the most memorable of the release.
“Buried Wounds” shifts gears with a slower, groove-laden approach that highlights the band’s ability to craft a thick, suffocating atmosphere. The bass rumbles ominously beneath the mix, adding a weighty presence that anchors the track. The vocal delivery here is particularly menacing, with deep, cavernous growls dominating the verses while piercing shrieks cut through in the more intense sections.
Closing out the EP, “From Ashes” is an epic, emotionally charged finale. The song masterfully weaves melody into its brutality, with soaring guitar leads that add an almost cinematic quality. The vocal performance is arguably the strongest here, showcasing a perfect blend of guttural power and high-pitched fury, ensuring that the EP ends on a high note.
From Ashes is a brutal yet refined entry into the world of melodic death metal. HEL HATH FURY proves they have the technical chops, songwriting ability, and vocal versatility to make a lasting impact in the genre. The mix of mid-range growls, guttural lows, and high-pitched shrieks is one of the standout aspects of the release, keeping each song fresh and engaging. With crushing instrumentation and an aggressive yet melodic approach, From Ashes is a solid release that leaves a lasting impression.
