New Music Review: GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, & MYRRH ‘Operation Take Over – EP’

REVIEW – This band consists of a trio of sisters. They are young and inspirations go from Paramore to Slipknot. I know what you are thinking. It was actually the first thing I was thinking as well. Gold, Frankincense, & Myrrh also knows what you are thinking as well as well as what I thought. This ep titled Operation Take Over is just that. “ Bones” kicks off the affair in this really good metalcore sound. Maggie has a vocal delivery that really establishes her early on as someone who throws it all out there. The guitar riffs really get this track’s personality early on and keep it through the infectious singing. “ I Don’t Want to Lose My Friends” is the track that you know will paint this band in the spectrum of Paramore or Metric. It is a poppy punk like song that feels welcome but it is such a sharp turn after “ Bones”. “ Taking Over” is another metalcore air guitar affair that will get people excited and may draw comparisons to Stone Sour. It has an insane amount of attitude and bravery. This shows the band is really not afraid to give metal fans something to think about. This song would not feel out of place during a pit at a show.

“S M I L E”, this one is odd to me. You have this Toni Basil like cheerleading vocal chant that really is catchy until the insanity hits the fan and you get this breakdown that really comes out of nowhere. “I Don’t Need Your Fantasy” is my least favorite song on this ep. I understand why they did it, but I feel songs like this feed the stereotype of what people will expect seeing their image or hearing them describe their music as their sound. I am willing to let this one pass because I feel they are just throwing it all out there and seeing what can connect with a fanbase. For me, this ep has a ton of promise. The bulk of this cd is enough to get people looking their direction and seeing what can come next. There is a lot of promise on here and hopefully this is going to lead to bigger things from the sisters.
