REVIEW – Released on July 9th, BURNT LUNG‘s self-titled debut EP is a bold and fierce statement from the all-queer punk/post-punk/queercore band. Their blend of heavy riffs and socially conscious lyrics, focusing on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights and social injustice, creates an intense and provocative sonic experience. The EP reflects both the personal struggles and political messages the band aims to communicate, making it a significant entry into the modern punk scene.

The EP opens with “Burnt Lung,” a track that combines aggressive guitar riffs and a powerful vocal delivery, immediately immersing the listener in the chaotic world the band portrays. The pounding drums and relentless pace are reminiscent of classic punk while the lyrics dive into heavier social topics. This combination of fury and purpose makes it a standout introduction to the band’s sound.

Crowbar follows, delivering a hard-hitting, fast-paced burst of energy that clocks in under three minutes. The chugging bass lines and urgent rhythm perfectly match the track’s sharp lyrics, which call out systems of oppression. Its brevity amplifies its impact, making it a song perfect for live mosh pits and anthemic crowd participation.

The third track, High On, slows things down just slightly, but doesn’t sacrifice the band’s signature heaviness. Luciyan’s soaring vocals, backed by Evie’s steady basslines, tell a story of escapism and the mental battles faced by marginalized people. The song’s combination of vulnerability and strength is captivating and showcases the band’s emotional depth.

The EP closes with Rest and Rot, a dark and brooding number that explores the themes of decay and disillusionment with systems that consistently fail marginalized communities. The instrumental arrangements take on a more atmospheric tone, creating a sense of weight that lingers even after the track has ended. Charlie’s drumming shines on this track, providing a steady backbone to the song’s ominous, introspective energy.

BURNT LUNG brings fresh energy to the punk and queercore scenes with their blend of aggressive post-punk and thoughtful social commentary. ‘Burnt Lung’ is a strong debut that showcases their potential as a voice for change within the alternative music world. Fans of hard-hitting, socially charged punk and metal will find much to love in this raw and unflinching release.
