New Noise Magazine is hosting the exclusive stream of âMinotaurâ from Chicago hardcore/grind quartet NEQUIENT. The song sees release ahead of their second album on which it can be found, Darker Than Death Or Night, out next week through Nefarious Industries.
NEQUIENT further expands their diverse palette on Darker Than Death Or Night without sacrificing their honed focus or capacity for vicious sensory assault. This is a singular breed of heavy music: tightly controlled yet satisfyingly grimy, attuned to the anxieties of an uneasy era and unconcerned about fitting into the preconceived boundaries of subgenre.
Mixed by Sanford Parker (Voivod, Yob, Eyehategod) and mastered by Collin Jordan (Harmâs Way, Windhand, Pelican), Darker Than Death Or Night features artwork and design by Scott Shellhamer (American Heritage, Buried At Sea, Coffinworm) as well as guest vocals from Eddie Gobbo of Something Is Waiting.
Vocalist Jason Kolkey writes with the âMinotaurâ premiere, “This is a track that encompasses a lot of who we are as a band and the overall direction of this album. We build on a foundation of thrashy d-beat that’s always threatening to veer into total chaos but holds together thanks to the tight interplay between the drums and guitars. Then, midway through, we take a turn into a sludgy nightmare of crushing riffs and suffocating atmospherics. The lyrics touch on some of the major themes that run throughout the record, confronting the ways that the current landscapes of politics and media unleash the worst in people. Too many are largely motivated by prejudice, incapable of even perceiving the complex systems that fuel their ill-defined grievances, and yet utterly convinced of their own righteousness.”
