REVIEW – Where has RAE FITZGERALD been my whole life? Popular Songs For Wholesome Families is a record that is so drenched in dream pop folk that you would not want to wake up from the gaze and the simple beauty that her delivery offers. Where most people these days overthink music and feel that they need to change to create or follow to maintain, Popular Songs For Wholesome Families is a record that is so secure and happy in the deep end of the blackened sea. RAE FITZGERALD has this emotional delivery to her voice that sounds like someone who is not speaking from a sheet of paper, but from her personal journey of life and the highs to low. Popular Songs For Wholesome Families has such a soft rocky rhythm that the songs seem to dress the blurry trip your mind will take song to song. There is one thing for certain, when RAE FITZGERALD opens her mouth it is beautiful, just dream like messiah to child like feeling. This is not a collection of songs, it is an exploration into her being. This is someone who knew to bring all her life into the recording of Popular Songs For Wholesome Families and see how the pieces could fall once she steals the moments with her words.
RAE FITZGERALD is a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and couldn’t care less what people feel or think, she wants people to know that she is aware of what she has been thru but gives us a lust for hope and that music is not a manipulative machine for money, but a tool for the human condition to change a listener and their life. This is a very deep indie rock folk pop hybrid that just plays off so wonderfully. I would put Popular Songs For Wholesome Families up there with the later recordings of Sinead and the early stuff of Bjork. Where you have an artist completely naked and giving you every part of them for you to consume and feel every note of it. Very few records made me shake while listening, this album hit so many emotional notes I was left with tears running down my face screaming that RAE FITZGERALD is the new face of pop. This is one reason why we need 120 Minutes and magazines like CMJ. RAE FITZGERALD and Popular Songs For Wholesome Families, what a powerful statement. This is quite the solar journey into places that we all fear once the lights close and we see the mirror of who we truly are. This is the soundtrack to what life truly is all about. I cannot recommend Popular Songs For Wholesome Families enough.
