New Music Review: CASTRATOR ‘Defiled in Oblivion’

CASTRATOR 'Defiled in Oblivion' - Cover Photo

Review-Castrator scares me. These women have a sound that made me check under my bed before I went to bed. This is the “ fuck you” that the industry has needed in such a long time. To say this band is a shot in the arm is very understating how amazing this debut album is. A lot has changed since their EP in 2015. Members came and left, and the buzz was all but gone. How do you change that? You just create a louder buzz than the last time. This is old school death metal in its core, with little sprinkles of new school thinking and production. This is a sound that just feels epic to the point that a cd does not justify the power that is coming through the speakers. I am shocked at how catchy and incredible the riffs feel. This feels like Arch Enemy got thrown into a blender with Bolt Thrower.

You can clearly tell that these women are having a blast on this record.   “ Tyrant’s Verdict” is such a gem. It has such a catchiness that you cannot escape this realm they throw you into. For me, the appeal of this cd is from how determined the band seems to give me a reason to air guitar or go back to listen to the last track again with an imaginary drum kit. I feel to be let down by any aspect of this CD, may be more reflective on the listener than what they are listening to. The classic feel of this cd cannot be ignored. This is a mother fucking death record that is so slamming and brutal. You may need a neck brace by the end of it. If Suzi Quatro was the woman your mother would not like, these women are the ones who will set the house on fire if your mother speaks. I am not so sure how fun being defiled in oblivion could be but this CD sold me on it. This is not your parent’s death metal. The torch has not been passed, but it has been taken. To quote Gene Simmons, “Rock Music is Dead”. Gene, you should have told that statement to these four. If Rock Music was truly dead, this band woke it the fuck up. If every music magazine and fan do not have this cd in their top ten in 2022…….Death Metal bow to the new masters.
