“With all the sudden shifts, I want people not to be sure of what will come next. I also hope they can relate to it at some level and let themselves be carried by the music. Covered in Dust is a personal songwriting and instrumental exploration along with it being a conceptual work. Behind it lies an arduous imperfect path to discharge fear, self-doubt, the marks of an oppressive upbringing, and the stigmas of years of interpersonal abuse.” – Bruna Wanderley – Kapitur

“after hearing this gorgeous album, I knew it was something to bring my attention back. Wonderful melodic and crushing cello doom never sounded so beautiful. Heavy doom sections with blasting drums and gritty guitars. Phenomenal vocals, then they bring the gorgeous sorrow. The album deconstructs everything and makes it flourish. It tears at your emotions and soul. Blackened doom is a genre I love digging through and I found a masterpiece with this album!” – Doom Heart

“You’ll certainly fall in love for the thunderous sound of her cello, placing her among the most interesting new names of the independent scene in Canada.”  – The Headbanging Moose

About The Album Artwork

The cover metaphors a scorching vomit of all self-loathing that patriarchal figures have fed to women through centuries under the disguise of kindness and self-respect. From the depths of my severe upbringing in a Pentecostal church and family, it represents the backwash of years of oppression, also symbolizing the end of my internalization and acceptance of oppression. Covered in Dust burns down everything around me which held me back, and brings myself to flourish over trauma.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

Thematically, this record speaks from personal experience. Inspired by the intrinsical struggles of exile, relationship trauma, and the safe space found in sci-fi literature, the album travels through wonder, solitude, and disillusionment. The existential themes are metaphors for the process of leaving one’s own homeland, failing to adapt, and making someone else your home to then yearn for salvation. The music moves from bleak cacophony to comforting melodies played on the cello, with warm, sorrowful tones that take you on an individual journey in a timeless space. A soul-burning amalgamation of chaos and beauty that unfold an atmosphere and pace that allows for the coexistence of tranquility and despair.

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

Nature Morte – Nature Morte owes to the ferocity of artists like Jarboe and Myrkur, who inspired me to compose, sing, and learn gutturals. The main riff in the song came to fruition on the cello, while the other instruments were added to suit its atypical presence. NM is about post-trauma disembodiment, the feeling of dissociating from your body and emotions in order to cope. Amidst an intangible turmoil, we tranquilize ourselves in the trivial only to become passive observers. Not seeing things for what they are, we give way to madness. Lost in our disembodiment, a distressed inner voice that had been shut calls for help, to the realization of our denial and numbness. This track is the only one that follows the familiar form of verse-chorus-bridge-outro.

The Dust in Us – This was the first song I wrote, using various cello tracks layered as if using a loop. Hence why this track is rich in textures. Initially intended as an instrumental song, the lyrics complement it well. Though haunted by delirium, we accept the traps of existence. We comprehend that regardless of what happened, decay is a common end. We are not the shrunk exploited self we once were, and escaping reality isn’t a choice anymore. Our bodies and souls are one, and we come anew into the world as the embodiment of both.

Amaurosis – Probably the weirdest, most unorthodox track, Amaurosis has a simple repetitive structure and vocals that follow SATB choir scoring. Religious ideologies teach us that female bodies are dirty and sinful, our bodies are guilty of all sin. Fearing insignificance, we find solace in dogmas. Despite our devotion, we live within an inexplicable sense of fear, guided by doubtful truths. The threat of religious demise brings us to lament, and pious cries for mercy.

Dream of The Ants – This song was the hardest to work with, being redone from scratch twice. Its versatile arrangements and unexpected shifts create moods that travel from progressive synths to black metal. Inspired by the safe spaces found in sci-fi literature, it explores feelings of loneliness and disillusionment. Existence is at first regarded as a miracle but, after living through trauma in solitude, we are colonized by hopelessness and desolation. In a vulnerable position, challenged by a cosmic feeling of loneliness we run into despair, and question our own sanity. A reaction to a world with no kindness.

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS:

1. After our second show someone came to us and said we’re better than BEHEMOTH!

2. We played a show at -42 C this winter. The heating stopped working, venue pipes were frozen. It was pretty unbearable, so we ended up wearing grandma sweaters for the performance.

3. Contrary to a few assumptions, our songs are recorded with acoustic cello. There’s no reason to record with an electric and miss all that body of sound!

Kapitur formed in Montreal in 2022 as the offspring of classical cellist Bruna Wanderley, who with empowering rage, aims to reclaim an identity shut by oppressive religious doctrines, social norms of gender, ruthless relationships, and exile. Their sense of unfettered musical exploration storms a mix of doom and post-metal.

Influenced by modern Swans, the 90’s Montreal Mile End scene, US east coast noise, contemporary classical music, death, and black metal, their sound can be bright, sorrowful, and atmospheric like a slow apocalypse. Marked by the band’s heavy instrumentation, the cello takes center with its warm voice coming naturally along the cellist’s alternatively gentle and unhinged vocals. With a lineup revealing their diverse backgrounds, Kapitur shares members with Spectral Wound, Massive Scar Era, and Ratpiss.

In 2022, their take on Sepultura’s Roots Bloody Roots was released to critical acclaim, which was then followed by their July 2023 debut EP Covered in Dust, which is the result of Bruna Wanderley’s initial one-woman band effort, drawing from her past traumas to find safe space in sci-fi literature.

Covered in Dust was mixed at Machines With Magnets by Seth Manchester, who is known for his work with Lingua Ignota, Big Brave, and The Body. Kapitur’s debut is a personal record that weaves a soul-burning amalgamation of chaos and beauty. It presents music that unfolds an atmosphere and pace allowing for the coexistence between tranquility and despair.
