Bastion’s Wake
Drops Powerful “Sunflower”
Proceeds to Benefit UNITED24 in Ukraine
“‘Sunflower’ is the culmination of our angst for, and inspiration from, our friends in Ukraine,”Â
Sami Hunter of Bastion’s Wake explains. “Ten or so months ago, while we were in the studio recording drums for our upcoming second album, Go Tell The Bees, Ray started noodling around on a guitar riff and the rest of us joined in with an explosion of creativity. Luckily, our engineer, Kirby, had the studio mics on and captured the entire thing, so we were able to go back and really write out what we wanted to say. Ben and Ray really rocked the bass and guitar, and Sami and Rob sat down and wrote out the lyrics.”
Bastion’s Wake released a powerful lyric video for their new single “Sunflower.” The video for
the track was created mostly with footage and photos from Ukraine, but also photos from people all around the world who shined a blue and yellow light.Â
All proceeds from the “Sunflower” song and merch will go to UNITED24, the official fundraising platform aiding in the defense and the rebuilding of Ukraine. (https://u24.gov.ua/)

About BASTION’S WAKE:
Formed in 2016, Bastionâs Wake started with married couple, Sami and Ray Hunter, and a vision. For the first few years, they couldn’t find a drummer near enough to them in NoWhere, DE to play shows/record, but refused to let that keep them home. To allow them to play live, Ray Hunter built and programmed “the box” to run their backing tracks. It synced with a light and video show that would fill the human gap on stage, and the response was more positive than they could have imagined. The duo released their debut album Sea Creatures and Sky Pirates in June of 2019, followed by a tour supporting We Are The Sentinels, featuring Matt Barlow (of Ashes of Ares, ex-Iced Earth/ex-Pyramaze) and Jonah Weingarten (of Pyramaze). In 2020, Ray Hunter recorded a track with Ashes or Ares for their EP Throne Of Iniquity, playing acoustic guitar cover on their killer cover of the beloved Kansas song “Dust in the Wind.”
Rhythmic father and son team, Rob Westbrook and Ben Westbrook joined the band in the summer of 2020, adding more magic to the sound and the show. Now, with their combined mix of (sometimes vastly different) influences and styles, Bastion’s Wake is building off of the momentum granted to them by their fans to create something bewitching. Says one insightful fan, Addy (age 10), “It’s like metal, but with a bunch more of other stuff.” Bastion’s Wake will release their second album, Go Tell the Bees, later in 2023.
