REVIEW – Ukrainian death-doom band MENTAL TORMENT is set to release their highly anticipated new album ‘Dead Shot Revival’ on October 28th. This marks an important moment for the band as it is their first release recorded entirely in the Ukrainian language, making it a powerful expression of both their musical and cultural identity.
‘Dead Shot Revival’ is an emotionally charged death-doom masterpiece that was created during one of the most turbulent periods in Ukraine’s recent history. The band, formed in Kyiv, has channeled the fear, anxiety, and despair brought on by the Russian invasion of their homeland into a deeply personal and resonant album. The six-track offering builds on the themes of madness and loss explored in their previous works, but adds a raw edge of hysteria, anger, and reflection, making ‘Dead Shot Revival’ a haunting journey through human experience and tragedy.
Opening with the track “DYM”, the band immediately plunges the listener into a world of suffocating heaviness, with slow-burning riffs and crushing rhythms, setting the tone for the entire album. The 10-minute epic “KAMIN” stands out as a melancholic journey filled with sorrowful melodies that evolve into heavy, dirge-like passages. Meanwhile, “PISOK” brings an overwhelming sense of dread, perfectly marrying doom-laden riffs with the desolate vocals of Roman Kostiuchenko, whose anguish-filled voice cuts through the mix.
Tracks like “SVINETS” and “HOLOD” further the album’s deep emotional weight. SVINETS drives home the intensity of the album’s narrative, capturing the suffocating tension of a country ravaged by war. HOLOD, which translates to “cold” in Ukrainian, pulls the listener through a chilling landscape of desolation, while maintaining the band’s signature blend of melodic and atmospheric doom metal.
MENTAL TORMENT does not shy away from experimentation on ‘Dead Shot Revival’, pushing the boundaries of traditional death-doom with modern touches, all while staying true to their genre’s roots. The album stands as a testament to the resilience of Ukrainian culture, as well as the band’s ability to evolve musically while reflecting on the dark realities of life. The band’s choice to record in their native tongue adds a level of authenticity and passion, making this release one of the most personal and impactful yet.
‘Dead Shot Revival’ promises to resonate with fans of melodic doom metal and those who appreciate music with a deep emotional and cultural context. It is both a reflection of past events and a chilling reminder of the present.
