“It Comes Out as a Joke” is the final act of the audiovisual trilogy created by Xiu Xiu to accompany their latest LP Girl with Basket of Fruit. Performance artists Ron Athey and Elliot Reed, band members Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo and others who were all featured in Acts I & II (“Scisssssssors” and “Pumpkin Attack on Mommy and Daddy“) return for the third video, featuring ritual ceremonies alternately spliced with chaotic and peaceful imagery. The song itself is a sample of the harsher, more pummeling rhythms used on denser parts of Girl with Basket of Fruit–an intense, cathartic oeuvre from a project that has pioneered noise pop for over 20 years. Since the release of Girl with Basket of Fruit, Xiu Xiu has been on tour in Europe and will begin their US tour on May 1st. The lineup for the live shows includes Jamie “Butch Jenny” Stewart, Thor Harris (Swans, Devendra Banhardt) and Christopher Pravdica (Swans, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), with local openers joining along the way and Harriss own Thor & Friends as a supporting act on select dates.
