REVIEW – BLACK EYE, a new musical endeavor focusing on David Readman’s vocal abilities will release their self-titled debut album on May 6. It was essential for BLACK EYE to create a melodic metal record that would highlight the incredible singing talent of front-man David Readman, who is unquestionably a world-class vocalist.
When Serafino Perugino, President and Head of A&R for Frontiers Records, had the idea to match Readman with producer/guitarist/songwriter Aldo Lonobile to create a melodic metal album based on Readman’s strong voice, BLACK EYE was born. Luca Princiotta (DORO) plays guitar on the album, which was produced by Lonobile (ex-Secret Sphere, Archon Angel, Sweet Oblivion), who also plays guitar on it. Drummer David Folchitto (ex-Fleshgod Apocalypse, Stormlord) and bassist Andrea Arcangeli (DGM) make up BLACK EYE (DGM). The orchestrations and keyboards are provided by Mattia Gosetti (Agarthic) and Antonio Agate, who have worked with a wide spectrum of musicians, including Secret Sphere, Timo Tolkki, Sweet Oblivion ft. Geoff Tate and more.
BLACK EYE’s self-titled debut album opens with “The Hurricane,” which boasts tumultuous rhythms, screaming guitars, and soaring vocals that will have listeners pounding their fists and banging their heads. The next song, “Space Travel,” has thumping drums, thunderous bass, blazing leads, and superb vocals. “Break the Chains,” the band’s third song, is sure to have everyone on their feet, chanting, and fist pumping. This song “No Turning Back” is sure to have people moving and playing air guitar as they allow their spirits get swept away by such beautiful songwriting and vocals. A catchy tune, “Darkest Night,” will have the listener swaying and singing along to the song.
The song “Midnight Sunset” follows, and it’s sure to transport listeners back in time. An incredible vocal performance and thumping drumming are only a few of the elements that make up the next track “Under Enemy’s Fire.” Just listening to the song “The Landing” brings back fond memories of my youth. Fast hard and heavy metal dominates the next tune, “Don’t Trust Anyone.” “When You’re Gone,” the following tune, has appealing riffs, beautiful synths, soaring vocals, and thumping rhythms. BLACK EYE wrap up their debut with “Time Stand Still,” a tune that will totally engulf the listener while sending shivers down their spine.
Fans of European melodic metal classics like as Masterplan and Edguy, as well as anybody who has admired Readman’s voice over the years in his numerous undertakings, will find plenty to enjoy here!
