REVIEW – Norwegian noise rock duo BARREN WOMB is gearing up to unleash their fifth studio album, Chemical Tardigrade, on February 16th, 2024, via Fucking North Pole Records/Blues For The Red Sun. Known for their unorthodox mix of sludge, punk, and post-hardcore, the band continues to push sonic boundaries with an album that promises to be their most intense and dynamic yet.
Opening with the tribal drum patterns of McLembas, the album builds an eerie tension before erupting into a full-force assault of jagged riffs and explosive rhythms. Tracks like D-Beatles perfectly encapsulate their raw, high-energy songwriting, fusing relentless aggression with infectious grooves that will undoubtedly have listeners hooked from the first listen.
The duo also explores a more melodic and textured side on tracks like Bug Out Bag and Campfire Chemist, where Gonzalez and Silvola’s vocal interplay shines, blending harsh shouts with unexpectedly tuneful passages. The album culminates in the emotionally charged Dung Lung, a stunning closer that delivers both weight and introspection, leaving a lasting impression.
With Chemical Tardigrade, BARREN WOMB refines their signature mix of chaos and groove, crafting a record that is as unpredictable as it is compelling. Drawing inspiration from Drive Like Jehu, At The Drive-In, and Fugazi, the duo forges a unique sonic identity that continues to defy classification. This album is set to be a defining moment in their already formidable career, promising to be a must-hear for fans of experimental and boundary-pushing heavy music.
