“No Monuments” is the latest video/single from Long Island, New York-based progressive/experimental metal artisans CRYPTODIRA. Now playing at Metal Injection, the track comes off the band’s Genesis Of Error EP, set for release on July 25th through Silent Pendulum Records.

Comments guitarist/vocalist Mike Monaco, who directed the video, “I’ve always been pretty passive when it comes to any involvement in direction or planning for music videos we’ve done but because we were in such a time crunch it fell to me to gather visual inspiration and put the shot list together for it. The main look for the video is obvious, but what I did the most homework on was the way the camera moved inside the narrative.

“All of it is pulled from [Brian] De Palma and [Alfred] Hitchcock. A week ahead of shooting I rewatched Dressed To Kill, Body Double, Sisters & Vertigo – I pulled a lot of clips, and we barely used a fraction. [Producer] Sean Ageman [Washed Up Media] was such a treat to work with and anything we pulled off was due to his savvy behind the camera and his editing. Moving forward, I’m hoping to build off this video and really start to create our own unique visual style, which is mostly just stealing from guys who have fallen out of favor. That’s what so much great art is anyway!”

Guitarist/vocalist Scott Acquavella adds, “For me, ‘No Monuments’ is the quintessential CRYPTODIRA song that we’ve been trying to write for years. It’s got a healthy dose of all the things that made us want to be in a band in the first place – heavy, in-your-face riffing, lush, clean sections with melodic vocals, and a moody climactic ending that checks all of the boxes. If somebody were to ask what our band is all about, I think I would just show them this song instead of trying to explain it.”

From the moment they debuted with 2017’s The Devil’s Despair, it was immediately apparent that CRYPTODIRA was a far cry from the polished, ultra-clean progressive metal stylings of their peers. A seamless blend of technically precise riffing, melancholic soundscapes, and the raw, feedback-driven aggression of bands far from the prog world allowed the Long Island foursome to carve out a niche all to themselves in the crowded heavy music landscape.

The band’s sophomore effort, The Angel Of History (2020), showed an increased willingness to wade into uncharted territory and further embrace its experimental influences. The album’s furious lyrical themes, critical of the oppressive history of both past and present, were brought into focus to make CRYPTODIRA’s message abundantly clear. Wrote Everything Is Noise of the release, “The riffs are enormous, the vocals are emotional and raw, and the band is wildly tight.” Lauded Metal Trenches, “if you want something proggy, powerful, and atmospheric, this band has you covered.”

The foundation established by the band’s first two releases led to extensive touring across the USA, Canada, and Europe/UK with progressive metal greats such as Between The Buried And Me, Haken, Intervals, Rolo Tomassi, Veil Of Maya, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Animals As Leaders, and many more.

With 2025 comes the dawn of a new era for CRYPTODIRA with the Genesis Of Error EP. Shortly after recording, the band added bassist Vincent Romanelli (Moon Tooth) to the trio of founding members guitarist/vocalist Scott Acquavella, guitarist/vocalist Mike Monaco, and drummer Matthew Taibi, marking a clear divide between the past and present. With their latest offering, CRYPTODIRA are once again pushing themselves beyond the boundaries of metal and into a space of their own.
